QC employees are in a real dilemma; on one hand, QC could lay you off in the coming months, if you were not already in the first round; on the other hand, you are facing diminishing options outside of QC. With Marvell’s exit, QC is the only US company left in the mobile space. If you are an IC designer, you are in a big trouble. Demand for RF skills is diminishing in US. For other skills, QC style project execution has created an Intel style engineering that is narrowly focused and not versatile for most other IC companies. We all have to be retrained to fit in with the rest of the IC industry. Check it out for yourself.

QC should be called Qual-grind. QG created a culture of success at any cost. Business practice is clearly questionable with global investigations. Internally, QG executes on matrix org. to grind through projects after projects, until individuals are burnt out. This is common practice in legal firms, where Darwin, survival of the fittest, is the standard. Now many people are being freed from the matrix.
Working for Qualcomm was a very bad experience for me too. I was never stressed like this before. Used to work almost 12 hrs a day, including weekends. Family life was hell and couldn't enjoy any vacations. Used to carry my laptop to the vacations. QC doesn't care much about employees. During my tenure, I saw two people committing suicide. Now, out of Qualcomm for last three years, I hardly have worked on weekends, come home before 6 pm and have time to look after my family and my health.
QC rewarded those who could maneuver the QC politics, like S&M who has not done one damn good thing for QC. He brought in QCA, he settled the fine with China, he brought multiple rounds of layoffs, and he is not done yet. No layoff for him. Does he feel responsible for hard working employees losing their jobs?
Meditation not medication .
Every person I know that has
Left QC is so much happier. Not one regrets leaving (even when laid off). Even the last dr that worked in the medical center said he was glad. That in all
His years he had never seen anyplace so taxing and stressful on its employees. When he suggested to HR and ER to start a medication practice to help they told him it would be too expensive: one more way which shows QC does not care about the true health and welfare of their employees. We can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for candy Ina secretarial bay each month but now at can we spend money to benefit our employees health. It is a very sad state of affairs there.
the problem is this ruins the whole playing field in SD, either work for shithole like Q or a startup that will in all likely good be gone in a year. Seattle here I come !
QCOM has to be one of the worst work environment out there; I heard AMZN is not much better. I think QCOM can get away with it because it's the only game in town in SD.
it is true QCT employees have a bad reputation for being too focused and task oriented. Not a creative thought or idea has come out of the organization in a long time. good luck you will need it.
@ Anonymous169376 hit the nail on the head. I left QC 3 years ago after being totally burned out in the big LTE push. While in Qualcomm I drank deep of the Kool-aid that there is no other company that is worth working for. Leaving opened my eyes, as it will of all those of you let go. In reality Qualcomm is the pits, every other place is better. You get paid more, treated better and actually get to enjoy life, develop interests, and have time with family.
The layoff was probably the best thing to happen to me. After more than 10 years of working for a department that only promoted White employees, and almost never being given a bonus, and working all day and all night QCOM did me a big favor by letting me go. I did get a wonderful job after QCOM and I get more pay and all my work is appreciated. I now work a regular day and get to enjoy my time with my family and friends. The stress at QCOM can kill you slowly and even the onsite doctor says that the employees are all extremely stressed out. The people who are going to be part of the layoff are no doubt worried about their future, but once they find a new job they will realize how much better it is to work in a more fair and humane environment. People who get to stay on at QCOM will have to pick up all the excess work and even they will finally be replaced with H1B employees and contractors. Believe me when I tell you being part of the layoff is good in so many ways. QCOM Thank you for destroying my life.
QC HW engineers need to jump on any opportunity they can find. QC not hiring and releasing thousands at the same time will wreck havoc on the job market. This problem is compounded by all other US companies exited mobile space. It is not a pretty picture.
In the coming months QC employees looking for jobs can comment on their job search. It is not clear how the industry will absorb the QC layoffs. Because of the adversarial relationship QC had with other IC companies, there might be a lot of hard feelings, as such Broadcom might not hire from QC. BC might have layoffs of its own that rival QC SD.
Folks need to develop technical skills to be used outside of Q. They know enough about Q politics. This is only way to move forward.
Intel is losing $4billion per year to stay in mobile. Intel is losing more money than QC's net profit in QCT. So, forget about going to Intel for HW job. China will make phones for the world, and the only thing left is SW. QC HW engineers need to learn to write apps.
Not true, Intel also doing mobile business, and they might get 50% of slim modem chip on next iPhone

If you are an IC hw engineer (Synopsys, Cadence, place&route, etc) you better look to a career shift. I did this 8 years ago and I'm glad I did.
Marvell is getting out because there is no profit in this area. Marvell’s market share will be absorbed by Mediatek, Spreadtrum, etc. QC has been on course of 10% decline per quarter for several quarters, and it is the same going forward. QC will continue to adjust headcount until profit is inline.
With Marvel's exit, QC just got stronger!
