Thread regarding Chesapeake Energy Corp. layoffs

Doug Lawler and all senior management

I was told you are reading this for humor. Here is something you will never hear on a Q&A session because those that are still working are too afraid they will lose their job because they voiced their opinion and one of you took offense. You have core values and want us all to live by them. Being open and transparent goes both way fellas. Your decision to not consult with the managers and supervisors on who was going to get cut is completely unacceptable. You not only swept our feet from right under us but you also voiced your opinion of your trust in us very loudly. Your decisions were based on a name on a piece of paper and had nothing else attached. Your list could have easily been created by throwing darts at a board. I can't speak for everyone but you cut some very valuable people in my area and left me some dead weight. You could have easily found out our suggestions by communicating and demonstrating that core value you preach from your soap box. We see these people day in and day out. We see how they perform and who is constantly putting in the extra time and effort to make this company great. Unfortunately you cut some of those same people, and we have to pick up the pieces. The concept of getting rid of my employees and leaving overpaid contractors is beyond belief. Some of these contractors make twice and three times what the employees you let go make. So if you were trying to save money and this was a financial decision then why did we not cut out contractors first. They make that money not because of their skills but because they are expendable. It is too late now but for future opportunities to demonstrate your precious core values and your trust and confidence in the management you have chosen to lead our areas I implore you to consult with the very people that can help make these difficult decisions not create collateral damage.

I think it's safe to say we've crossed the tipping point. Dick Drainer Doug had successfully brainwashed the majority of people here at CHK. Original thought will soon be dead. It's sad that so many of you have become hipnotized by the words from DDD strategic management text book. DDD has nothing to say unless it comes from that text book, it's always with him.

Quit your whining and be thankful you are employed. There are 700+ who love to be in your whining shoes and would focus on working not how they feel overlooked and discriminated against. You have no idea if any of what you've stated below happened. Only your pure speculation again. Be greatfull and get back to work.

BOTTOM LINE - GREAT POST from a Manager with true insight. Post is accurate - glad someone voiced it ! You have faith in our ability to manage but don't consult with us (managers and supervisors) on something like this. Employee salaries are posted against the G&A (General and Administrative) on the books. Contractors are not. CHK has to get the G&A expenditures down to impress the stockholders. The contractors are expendable at any given moment and reflect totally different on the books. In regards to the faith and throwing darts at names, it is ALL VERY SAD and total discrimination. They go through the list of names and some of their resumes and pick and chose. I like him because he Mormon or because he was a member of the BSU or went to St. Gregory's or played basketball or is from Tennessee. TOTAL discrimination. Then, they don't split couples and relatives for the most part. If I "like" him and want to keep him and his wife work's in another department, it doesn't matter if one of them or both are very low performers, they keep both or cut both. TERRIBLE way to run a business!! They kept some couples where at least one of the two were terrible employees. The system stinks. They did this in 2013 also. No consultation of the people that they put in charge and rely on for performance reviews. ANSWER: Give HONEST performance reviews and GET RID of the dead weight!!! I know that it is easier said then done (from Mgr experience) but we have to do it.

Hey dumbass, It's your responsibility to get rid of poor performers. How about you actually "manage". You just caused those good people to lose their jobs because you didn't manage the losers out.

To think Doug and upper management have driving this company to the ground. Don't give me that "it's commodities" bullshit. Excuses don't hide your failures.

Unfortunately for you, you now realize the hell that is middle management and how little power you do have. There were literally TONS of CHKs middle managers that had an over inflated sense of self-worth and a depressed ability to actually get things done and manage. All too often they let the position go to their heads, you sound like one. You're in middle management hell and you will either buck up, shut up and rise above it all....or whither away, complaining the whole time about how shitty upper management is. Do yourself a favor and don't repeat any of what you typed here in real life to anyone. Nobody cares, least of all Dougy and company.

Core values. Ha! The executive team doesn't actually believe in that, silly. It's just a bunch of happy crap they learned in a management class that is supposed to unify and give everyone warm and fussy feelings all over. Don't be guillible. That type of management style isn't leadership, it's minipulation. It's the same strategy that most politicians use to get stupid people to do and think what they want them to. If you think you are more than just another row on a spreadsheet to them, you are fooling yourself. Never forget: "You are not your job, you're not how much money you have in the bank. You are not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You are not your f'ucking khakis. You are the all singing, all dancing crap of the world,"

Oh the idiots have been identified alright.. In business - it's not a democracy. You probably think your individual vote counts in a presidential election too right!?! The AKM era of entitlement continues and obviously this didn't clean them out. Quit comparing about the "process" and throwing those core values around when you like to - because you're no shine example of them. Be thankful you have a job because a lot of people would trade with your complaining ass right now.

If the direct managers were not consulted then that is a shame. However I can see how you might think consultants are a poor way to go. The National Bureau of Labor states that employers can save up to 30 percent by hiring an independent contractor because they avoid paying payroll taxes, unemployment insurance, workers' compensation and disability, as well as benefits that include pensions, sick days, health insurance and vacation time. Because independent contractors are considered self-employed, they must pay the federal government 15.3 percent for Social Security and Medicare, as well as any state or local taxes themselves. Most people just see the high salary associated with the contractors and think they are killing it. They aren't hurting any but they have to take care of all their own taxes and retirements.

And don't forget - contractors don't typically have an unreasonable sense of entitlement that some employees (many at CHK - OP likely included) tend to develop.

Ok so this is now the most stupid post of the day. First if you weren't consulted I'm sure there is a reason (and this post is evidence). Contractors are being cut. BUT Contractors as a rule usually cost less overall because there's no benefit cost and related severance if you have separate them. Look around. Tons of companies prefer contractors for that very reason - it's cheaper and allow a LOT more flexibility in managing your workforce. They may be looking at your job to outsource. (Hopefully).
