I'm not trying to be rude...but they need to lay off middle management before laying off the hard working employees that do all the work. The supervisors do not know as much as their employees. That is insane. Sometimes, I ponder why they are even there. Just to sit around and get a paycheck for doing nothing. We don't really need them. We could just report to upper management and do just fine. NOV should be smarter about their decisions.

Anon 173983, what is your meaning of "not all middle management is bad?" Everyone interprets and understands differently. What makes you not a bad middle manager? What makes you different than others who are in middle management? And why do feel you need to work harder? Do you say these things to make you feel better about yourself? Is there a reason why you mentioned they made more money than you? Why do you feel you need to justify and prove yourself?
Not all middle management is bad. I am a middle manager, but I only have one other person that works with me in my department (the others were let go). I actually do more work than she does. I work just as hard as anyone, I actually bring my work home with me and work there too at night after I take care of my family. I started out as a receptionist and worked my way up over the years. And to be honest the pay isn't all what you think it is, several of the people that used to work under me that was let go actually made more money then I do! So some of us middle managers have it just as bad as ya'll do. JS
You are laughable my friend.
PCG it looks like you are mad buddy take it easy I'm pretty sure you won't get employed by NOV no more, the reason you are not there any more is probably because you were worthless.
Amen to that oh by the way your boy sent you a shout out from NOV stop talking before you get flies in your mouth
Right on PCG person. Right on.
I think it's funny that that person on here thinks that I was laid off. I have not been laid off. Anyhow, i just think its dumb to have all these layers of management. It would be different if they were worth something or they helped us in any kind of way. All they do is sit and read emails and approve our time cards. Really...why is there a position just for that? If my boss had to do my job for the day...he couldn't do it. He has no earthly idea how to do it either. Why is this ok? I can't go to my boss for help. I have to go 2 steps above his head if I have a problem. Yet, they are laying off people who can get the job done. Lunacy!
There's a special place in HELL for middle management folks.
If only we lived in a perfect world we would have personal responsibility until that time we have middle management
im at orange, ca. we need less supervisors that sit in office's and read e mail. I have been there lets say over 20 years. get rid of all the computers they use and put them on the floor. then maybe they would learn how there dept. works? lead people do their job and don't get the $$ they get. my opinion here.
I dont feel that there is a need for a "lead man"..
Thats just a spot made to help someone feel better about themselves..
That is what the supervisor should be for.. But, the supervisor likes these lead men cause where im at, they are the tattle tale cry babies, which makes the supervisor happy..
Where im at, the supervisor cant handle conflict.. So, throw in some lead men to take the heat
NOV Creekmont having about 15 machinists but they had 2 lead men, 1 supervisor and 1 production manager.
1 lead man just get paid because he has a title.
1 supervisor just hang in and let some else do his jobs.
Haha! Funny you mentioned that. I saw the organizational chart for our department and laughed so much right in my managers face when it was shown to me. After pointing out and asking about the ridiculous layers of management, I was labeled as a troublemaker. Since then my manager was always questioning everything and anything I did or say. Paranoia is what I gave her as a nickname. Still waiting to this day for a sane and logical response to why there are layers and layers of mangement in place.
"point out this ignorant behavior", sorry got an a roll and fingers didn't keep up.
The problem with Middle Management at NOV is that there SHOULD be a middle management, just not 3-5 layers of it. Pete Miller was fond of saying he wasn't a fan of organizational charts because "it puts you in a box". Well you have a bunch of "smart guys" at VP and P level that have NO CLUE has business is actually done at the shop, order entry, quote, etc. level and they say to each other, "You know, that's important. We should put someone in charge of that." Then the person they put in charge of it has no idea what he's doing so he hires two "managers" who want "supervisors" and those "supervisors" aren't qualified either because your "director" didn't know what the job needed or what kind of skills were required so he hired the wrong Manager and on down the line . . .you end up with NOV. A bunch of guys (notice so few women in positions of authority there, shame shame NOV) who promote their buddies and can't figure out why they are failing. Then they finger point and blame. So back to the original point here: If you had an organizational chart that people looked at regularly they might figure out that it looks ridiculous and someone f'd up, but don't expect that to happen anytime soon. They will get rid of hard working people or the people who point out this lunacy out to them as the "hard working" people are too dumb to be with the "big smart guys" and those that this ignorant behavior out are "troublemakers" and need to go away.
Anonymous173242: WTF is Looool? See, you couldn't even get that one right middle management heap of dung. Lol! You're probably one of those nutsacks who's in middle management who knows good and well you're just a waste of space who needs to go. If it weren't true then you wouldn't get your panties all rolled up in a wad. Oh and by the way, I am still employed at NOV. So keep wishing ding dong. If you were my manager, I'd knock some sense into you or knock you right out of your middle management position like I did my manager, who by the way was laid off yesterday. Lol!! Take a bath cos you stink!
Well, in my department there is my boss...then he has a boss, then he has boss that is over our whole department. Surely, we could manage without my boss or even his boss. No reporting to VP's.
Only in fantasy island does anyone report directly to VPs. Who comes up with such ridiculous ideas?
too broad a brush......by all means get rid of middle management who are no good but do you really think that the average Joe Blow could get by without leadership? Deluded friend.....
SMH:
See why you were laid off? ...cos you never ponder and think. You blurt out BS and your supervisor couldn't stand you and never promoted your behind.
I repeat, we need middle management. Since you want to ruin this thread, I'll go there with you.
On behalf of NOV, you will not be missed. Angry you!! Looool.
So if I read this correctly, in this scenario we would all report to our VPs. I love the idea but it will never happen, no way could a VP know exactly what is going on with every build or project. They don't answer questions now because of "workload" can you imagine if they had to answer 10 or 20 times more. I will stick with the paper pushing managers I don't want to deal with the red tape
Don't get your panties all in a knot 173211. No one is appointing anyone nor wants to. Did you not understand the original post? Read slowly, think & ponder on each sentence, repeat as needed. Here we go........ "We do not need middle management." In other words, We know how to do our jobs. "We could just report to upper management. " In other words, we don't need middle management.
Should supervisors be laid off, who becomes team lead? You're pretty much appointing someone else as supervisor. All teams need a leader. It makes no sense laying off a supervisor unless the team is dissolved and everyone laid off.
I agree! I've been saying the same thing all along! Middle management is nothing but a damn nuisance and waste of space. That is an issue across the board at NOV within the entire company.
The politics really irk me as 5he sole provider of my family.
Some people from middle management were laid off as well. Not trying to be insensitive, but from what I witnessed, layoffs has been from the shop floors to middle management. We lost folks from my team too.
