Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

I was FIRED!

Got laid off Monday morning, I was the first in my group to get the axe. It sucked. I was able to go back to my desk and say goodbye and get my crap. I was with the company less than one year and did not get severance. Anyway, no hard feelings for COP. No company is perfect, but I will move on with life.

Everyone gets at least a little severance, unless they've been fired.

Best wishes. If it eases the sting a bit, being fired is quite a bit different than being laid off in terms of future work. In the oil industry the cyclic nature of the markets and the business lead to many of the long timers having been through a RIF (reduction in force). After projects are done there are RIFS. Low oil prices, there are RIFS. Change in company strategy (all oil, no gas ... or vice versa) there are RIFS. In a RIF you may be more likely to get the 'pink slip' if your team or skills don't fit the new profile but there is a high likelihood you are NOT being laid off because you didn't perform, didn't fit the culture, or violated the SPIRIT values. Why the careful distinction in words? Because when you are looking for a new job and they ask why you left your old one, you can say that your group was restructured as part of the 2015 COP layoffs. No harm, no foul. Everyone in the industry knows there is a COP layoff going on and you are one of many. Also, from an unemployment perspective you can collect if laid off, but NOT if fired (for cause).
