HR haters...there is not One hr person embracing or enjoying what they have to do. It's not their decisions. They are mentally and physically impacted by what they are having to do...and yes when the ugliness is over some of these great people will be gone too..no one is safe. So many worthless f***s respoding to this thread. HR DID NOT GET RID OF YOU! They have a job just like you and me and thiis time it's shittier. Your boss or your bosses boss put YOUR name on a list to "GO". Maybe upper management took that list and drew the names from a hat or threw darts, but YOU were put on that list, and it wasn't HR that did it. Why do you think HR is so cruel? If they gave you a kiss and hug you could file for sexual harrassement. How can they tell someone "Thanks for your service with the company", when you might be the one that was worthless. HR does not know you, they know the list they've been givien )thanks to your management). I guess when you start interviewing for a new job and they ask why you were laid off, you can say "HR laid me off", I would suggest you say "due to the downturm of the oil industry".

I don't hate HR. I think the HR department's power should be scaled back and they should operate as a supporting body only... From what I've seen they have some how managed to inflat their importance and have way more influence than they should have in the day-to-day operations of the company.
The folks in COP HR are doing a difficult job, however as an observation they should really rename them the Personnel dept,
The idea of Business partners and helping people is a pipe dream, they are simply functionaries to protect the company and administer policy.
Yes they are doing there job. But when they bring you on its all pots of gold and leprechauns. Guarantee you a job for yrs period. They need to tell people the truth.
I don't blame HR for the layoffs, but does ANYONE have a successful story where they went to HR due to some injustice or difficulty with management and walked away with a positive resolution instead of being treated like a rape victim who was "blamed" for their own rape? After 35 years with the company, I know of no such positive outcomes.
Good luck starting a company with no payroll, employee relations (aka the staff who deals with people complaining about their boss or direct reports), recruiting, benefits, etc. Oh, and watch the law suits roll in. There are a myriad of laws and regulations that most people don't think twice about that companies have to follow and manage. I know that HR is the messenger here, but they are not the responsible party for the lay offs. Trust me, they go home at night and rock themselves to sleep praying that they are not next.
I have many friends in HR who perform many functions. HR does not make the decisions to lay people off. The executive LT makes these decisions and eventually might get input from management on their staff. Majority of HE staff are only employees like you and like you have to do what they been told to do. If any of you are supervisors and were told to lay off one if your staff, would you do it or quit your job because it made you sick and upset to lay that person off

Not sure what to make of the original post. Is the OP trying to validate HR as compassionate and caring because they are "mentally and physically impacted" when they take someone's job away? Any decent human being should be. Also, are we supposed to feel sorry for you and your collegues because your jobs are at risk? Join the club, we all had to go through the stress of worrying about losing our jobs this last week...

I hate HR because their work is not technically challenging, they seem worthless, basically have degrees in vaginal hair trimming, and make good money. It's all true and you know it.
