Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Cleaning house

Based on my group, they seem to be finally getting rid of all the old farts who have just been getting by on experience. If you can only send plain-text emails and you don't understand spell check, you should not be in this century's workforce. I don't care how much experience you have in the industry.

And an indication of the culture created by the management of ConocoPhillips and the culture created by the industry as a whole. Quite the unhealthy culture.

Truly, there are some very bright younger folks at COP. You, though, are definitely not one of them.

I'll take old school hard knocks over a text book any day.

Some of the best teachers I've had in this industry had 7th grade educations, and started working on a rig with their dad when they were about 12. They proved to be the best mentors for college educated engineers, and were worth their weight in gold. Sadly, most are gone now, and all that remains is the arrogance and ignorance represented so well by 175964.

Thanks for your many years of service. Really. But don't be offended when the company doesn't blow up just cause you left. Everyone is replaceable. Even you.

I'm thinking troll. It's only us old farts that would understand "plain-text" emails.

But then again, only a younster would need "emjoi's" to help their emails :) <----- Notice the smiley, that's how we used to do it.

This goes along with the response from Anonymous176030 about not receiving "participation trophies for just showing up". When us old farts were kids kids, the winners got the icecream and snow cones and the 2nd place losers got shit. When I first started working for the company, yes, it was Phillips Petroleum, I respected the "old farts" and their experience and I knew my college degree was just a stepping stone and was not a step above the "old farts" who said, "been there, done it". I can't tell you how many times new grads have come in to re-invent the wheel. Technology has changed leaps and bounds, but there are some things that never change. Learn from the "old farts" and at least feel blessed about learning the mistakes they made. If the "old farts" you work(ed) with never admit to mistakes, don't trust them.

Well maybe your in the turd pile of COP. Here they would not let this old fart leave ! Yea riding on experience! That is why I get calls from the majority of group asking what to do or figure something out all day long. And that is why I run circles around the 20 year olds whom don't know their asses from holes in the ground! As Jimi Hedrix said " Are You Experianced?"

I guess it really depends on your boss care a lot about spell checking and others care more about increasing the rate of oil coming out of the ground.

It still takes 35 years to get 35 years experience. I don't care how well you can cut and paste. I don't need spellcheck. I actually learned how to spell in school, where, by the way, we didn't all receive participation trophies for just showing up, f***tard.

All that experience and knowledge walking out the door will soon reveal how little industry knowledge you young, delude-obsessed you have and how most of those leaving carried a lot of you. You'll actually have to show up and work now, not just send perfect emails

@175964, if you're relying on spell check, you need a better education.

Grammar and spelling are overrated unless you are publishing an article. I'd fire you too.

I thought we were in the business of getting hydrocarbons out of the ground. Getting by on experience vs. grammar and email skills seems pretty logical to me. Who gives a care if someone can't write a beautifully written email.

You don't seem to have the ability to read for context vs. the mechanics of something as simple as spell check. Maybe you should be a middle school teacher, because your future will be rather short sighted and just not a good fit with any corporation.
