Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Bartlesville vs. Houston

I have lived all over with the company including Bartlesville and Houston. I enjoy both places very much and for different reasons. Bartlesville offers a great family environment with no commute and is great for the small town people. Houston offers plenty of entertainment and things to do and a lot of places in Houston have a more urban feel. However at this current time the company will do what it sees is best for business, whether you agree with the decisions or not. Hopefully whatever happens I hope people are able to stay strong and survive this downturn, whether with COP or another company. We are all in this together, or should be.

Supervisor noted a disinterest in a "Bartlesville career" and proceeded with the low rating justified by nothing more than the words SPIRIT Values in the performance rating. And then he proceeded to note the highlights of Bartlesville for the next 30 minutes. The advice from the HR BP was to find a job in Houston. The fact I will never set foot in Bartlesville is reason enough to be happy with the layoff.

Where did you read any of that in my comment? 60 not 32 and seen more of Conoco worldwide than you ever will. I wear Maroon not Burnt Orange. The company will do whatever the leaders think will make a profit. Htown or B'ville doesn't matter.

Let me guess, 143219 is about 25 years old, probably graduated from UT, complains he is underpaid, doesn't know a damn thing about the history of the company, etc. What a moronic comment. One of the things that made the company great was the small town mentality. People actually gave a shit about each other and you weren't just a number on a spreadsheet. The only 'negative' effect of having an office in Bartlesville is difficulty recruiting new hires who want to live in the big city. If that means fewer pompous idiots such as yourself, I would actually consider it a positive.

The small town mentality of Bartlesville has a disproportionate impact on the big city ConocoPhillips. For ConocoPhillips to survive the small town mentality needs to be eliminated. The elimination of Bartlesville altogether is a quick and easy method to eliminate the small town mentality. Bartlesville is a shithole and the laughing stock of the E&P industry.

You have to face and accept the reality of things. Ok, maybe you don't have to, but it's not an HTown vs B'ville war. It comes down to doing what makes economic sense in today's environment. I don't forsee a complete closure in October but B'ville is going to take a big hit in this next round.

For you Houston folks who think the Company cannot exist without you specifically in Houston - remember Headquarters use to in Bartlesville for Phillips and in Ponca City for Conoco, Conoco moved to Houston but there was a lot of activity between them and DuPont. Because we became such a large player at that merger, the headquarters was moved to Houston. Houston jobs are specialized, and Bartlesville jobs are specialized, neither site can step right in and do the others jobs. Quit being Pompous. Your location is not superior, it just happens to be the headquarters today. History shows they can move the headquarters whenever they want to wherever they want. If you are a CoP employee - all I can say is wow might do better if you practice some humility because you are not superior.

That's true, I don't think I would volunteer to go so someone else could have a job. That just won't happen, unless maybe someone is ready to retire or gets the winning Powerball ticket but that hasn't be me.

How in the world can you think we are all in this together? That will never happen. We may be coworkers by chance but I would take your job in a second to protect my families resources. I think you would do the same whether you admit it or not. Get real, this is not a game. Do your best work and I'll do mine but that may not be enough to keep a job here. Job search will begin and life will go on.

As the company reduces workforce to close to 10,000 employees it just doesn't make business sense to keep offices in Bartlesville. How many other E&P companies split their corporate functions between two locations and two states?

The new management never understood the Bartlesville vs. Houston issue. Inquiries associated with movement of individuals from Bartlesville to Houston were met with a "get in line" statement. Entire careers were focused on acquiring a role in Houston, any role in Houston. But then again the new management did not employ the tactics of the old management and move people back and forth between Houston and Bartlesville without rhyme or reason. In the end the resources in Oklahoma are better served with a phycial presence in OKC or Tulsa and not Bartlesville. Bartlesville is an excellent disaster recovery site for Houston but serves no purpose otherwise.

Not saying Bartlesville will be shut down at all. I just don't understand the Houston vs Bartlesville fighting going on. I've lived both places and enjoyed them both. It doesn't matter what we think, or who likes Bartlesville or not, the company will make it's decisions and do what it wants. I just don't exactly understand all this hate towards Bartlesville.

They will go through with layoffs and consolidating Bartlesville to Houston. Then a month later, we will be bought out since we are now "right sized". My bet is Chevron but Exxon has a pile of cash it hasn't used yet this downturn.
