Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

It's OK to be laid off

From 1996 to 2006, a group of scientists went onsite at Boeing to study what happens when a company is inundated with layoffs. They wrote a book about the study -

"Turbulence: Boeing and the State of American Workers and Managers". They claim that laid-off employees were actually better off than the ones who stayed behind and struggled to stay relevant and visible, do the work of several employees and hold onto their jobs.

I can confirm. I worked at Boeing in that time frame and survived 4 rounds of layoffs, and left as soon as I could and found my way to the old COP.

Do not hesitate to pursue a role elsewhere. A notation of "imminent layoff" in the current economic environment will suffice for prospective employers. The unemployment and the severance does help bridge the gap between one company and another in lieu of a job offer elsewhere.

I actually sometimes wish I would get laid off, the stress has affected my personal life and I have been on the fence on whether I want to stay. Finding another job would not be fun but at least it would make the decision easier. jist not sure how I feel about the company anymore

I see both sides, going through a layoff can leave the employee with feelings of distrust towards that company. If they did it to John down the hall what is to stop them from doing it to me? The company leaves the employee feeling vulnerable, especially if it isn't based strictly on performance and we know that doesn't happen here. On the other hand that sense of relief when it is all said and done and you are the "last man standing" can also inspire feelings of gratitude and make for a leaner workforce that is more efficient. Until the next round of layoffs at least when the insecurity resurfaces for everyone, especially when it is dragged out over months and months and no communication is forthcoming

AGREED with Anonymous143338. Plus, COP is not Boeing.

That's a crock of B.S. I am really going to feel sorry for the guy who still has a nice pay check and benefits. Ooh, ouch he has to work a little bit harder while paying his house and car notes.
