Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

My personal issue isn't the layoffs, cause every company is having them, my issue is HOW they are handling them.

Lack of communication on what is going on. No one knows exactly how the people who are laid off are chosen, and when they are chosen they are walked out like convicted felons. I've been with the company over 10 years and have had solid performance ratings with some 1's and 2's quite a few years. No manager or supervisor has ever said anything negative on my performance, yet I am very worried right because of the secrecy that is going on. Is there anyone on here with HR inside info or inside info on how the people are chosen who are laid off?

Yes. The layoffs have began. They are just being a lot more quiet about it. The day they let me go, they let about 7 go that I know of in Bartlesville.

Diddo 144361. I also was ranked as 1 and 2 over my 12yr career. Raised up the ranks fast then BOOM escorted out. With a "we no longer require your services". Real nice COP. I was making a sh$@ load of money so I guess that's why. I will NEVER be that loyal to a company again. Remember your an employee nothing more! Every single one of you should be nervous. I have seen the top and it's all politics and lining their pockets. Watch your back because no one else will! Good luck and don't let them see you sweat.

You were laid off August 20th? Have the layoffs started? What group were you in?

I was laid off August 20th. I was not expecting it at all. I have always relieved good ratings and a promotion the end of 2014. My supervisor always had positive feedback for me. Boy, was I blindsided!

About time COP woke up and laid off all the old boy network that cannot deliver and have no idea on how to run a company.

I don't about CPC feeding your family for 9+ years..... were they giving you charity!!!!

didn't you really earn your salary or did ya get paid fpr doing nothing?! For that to go unnoticed for 9 years, that tells you something about COP! Or your really good at pretending!

Thank you HR - my name is Liam Nelson, employee number 08245678928473719473628474724573. I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have $60MM. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career at ConocoPhillips. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you - skills of a deep-water geoscientist....

Thanks ConocoPhillips, you've fed my family for 9+ years. You mandated safety. You expected integrity and a sellable product. You challenged me and the teams I worked on. You kept me up at night, and made me sleep hard. I fairly compensated for the work that I did. I appreciate the benefits and the education that I received under your tutelage. You challenged me and taught me. You certified me, and then put my certifications to work. You gave me ore challenges than I wanted at times, but I'm better for it. I count my blessings and hope for COPC success in turning it around. Its been a great ride. Thanks.

Sorry, but I have to laugh at this . . . "They could offer voluntary resignations with a better severance package; - And they could improve the severance package (more vesting, paid training, better retirement for example)". They are trying to save money, so this would never happen.

As for the selection process, it is simple . . . They are letting go based on age & pay scale which helps to reduce salaries, reduce performance awards, reduce retirement, & to eliminate heritage retirement programs which are better than what is offered to the younger employees. This is all without regard to performance. Now to reduce the possibility of age discrimination lawsuits they are laying off a few younger poor performers. They send reports showing numbers laid off based on age to hedge their bets against this EEO action.

These lay-offs could be better handled.

  • They could promote part-time;

  • They could give more advanced notice to people being laid off to increase their chances to find another job;

  • They could offer voluntary resignations with a better severance package;

  • And they could improve the severance package (more vesting, paid training, better retirement for example)

it is tough for them to decide who will stay who will go...

closing deep water program will not be easy for them to pick up 1 or 2 or 3 based on the performance.

when oil price was around 100 last year, why no group/leader warn ELT?

I agree, you can't tell employees that layoffs are coming and then go silent. I get it, layoffs are happening and I don't blame the company...they have to do what they have to do. Personally, getting laid off would not be terrible for me but I know for some people it's a very stressful time. They need to improve communication. And certain groups should not be getting emails and then others don't get anything (i.e. the finance email).
