Go to angel.co/job-collections/stanford-founders for a list of openings and a sense of what are the current job profiles in demand. There are only 0.01% of starups funded, but the number of applications is 1000000. You only need to find 1.
Gee, so much desperation over jobs in Q. I feel there are open positions for life coaches to tell people what to do next. If you are smart, with experience, kept learning outside your narrow field, you will make it for sure. For a young guy, or someone who is not eager to live large, a $500k 3bdr condo is enough and doable from a $120k salary that most companies will pay. If you went for the $800k del sur home, bought at peak, or have a pool to maintain (while you din't use it anymore), college to pay for, and all on a single salary then your plan was iffy to start with. Always start with the assumption that you'll end up making a little above $100k, and you can lose your job in 2 years. Everything you save, invest safely. You'll be amazed having $300k in savings in 5 years...
The person who wrote this is a rich QCOM vice President. He can retire. Rest of us have to move.
Startup won't pay the mortgage, property tax, maintenance on a house here.
Startups don't make money for years and can't do a payroll without VC money.
Very difficult to get VC money. 99.99% of business plans don't get funded.
Changing bits 10 and 31 is not disrupting shit. You better help old folks cross the street and feel much better.
"There are thousands of startups employing 10 engineers with valuations of 4-5mil.". Um, clearly that's their fault for not "disrupting $hit". heck, you can "disrupt" the disposable razor market, and be worth $2 billion. Bluetooth razors? -- 10 billion, easy.
Keep in mind that not all startups are Facebook/Twitter and better not be. There are thousands of startups employing 10 engineers with valuations of 4-5mil. The more the better.
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-31044810 andhttp://www.techworld.com/startups/how-collapse-of-nokia-has-fuelled-finnish-startup-revolution-3596253/ I am affraid the HW engineering can't span anyrhing meaningful. Only SW and product/systems can.
And how many of these "Nokia subsidized" startups are still around? It would be pure charity and total waste of money earned by all Q employees as a collective, distributed grossly unevenly to the top.
One thing is missing: Irwin must come out and say something... Would he work for today's Q? Why?
The author is partially right. I will open a startup and launch in 3-6months if this happens. The problem is that we'll hire only if we take off and looking at highly motivated juniors first. The idea for Q to start funding in SD is great and common sense. This is what Nokia did in Finland.
I cannot wait to see what layoff package I will be getting!
Written by PJ's childhood friend! True fact.
I think it is an accurate article
Qualcomm is becoming more and more irrelevant each year. Even the Union Tribune stopped the guru worship after Irwin resigned from the board.
Sure, but there's nothing you can do about that, especially if you happen to get laid off. This is merely a positive perspective on turning things around for those who get laid off. May not be reassuring or applicable to everyone, of course, and I sympathize with all who are anxious about very tough outcomes that may come out of this if they are impacted. But I appreciated this article; it made me feel a little less anxious and a lot more empowered. This isn't the end of my world, but the end of one job, and I will survive this stressful curveball and thrive on elsewhere. And if reading this can help ease somebody else's anxiety, then it was worth sharing.
I am positive that under Steve m's leadership, Qualcomm will continue to be a disaster
