IOT: turning on your coffee pot from bed, feeding the dog from your smartphone when you’re running late, unlocking a hotel room

https://www.qualcomm.com/news/spark/2015/09/01/all-knowing-internet-things-what-happens-my-data

really?

can anyone make money out of this ?

If so, is it serious money?

I see this IOT as a huge scam / bubble //

it could burst in a couple of years.

how many will use in the US/UK?

Outside the western world, I can guarantee the business will be almost 0%

I go to IoT meet ups in OC. Haven't seen a good product concept yet - just a lot of repetitive hype.

BUT - research Google Eddystone. That could take off with the right company and solutions behind it. Problem is that beacon suppliers are small companies with no global or much US presence. And China can eat their lunch on the hardware. Again the money will be in software and hardware fairly simple so us hardware guys are screwed. I didn't realize how bad it was for hardware until laid off and now have to find something. Other bubbles are drones and 3d printers...

IoT will happen. It is inevitable. But HW will be almost free. The $$$ will be in the information. I am betting and preparing for this.

IoT isn't pointless but it won't make sense for a while, 10 years? It's the sort of thing that we cannot even really fathom being useful. There are plenty of inventions like that that now seem obvious (personal computers, the internet, ipod/iphone, uber, etc). It seems like eventually everything will eb connected, if you think about the trajectory, at this point we cannot even fathom how that would be useful (I know I can't).... I agree with other poster though, datacenter is safer bet in the next 5 years... I disagree thought with the poster who says it's for bottom end chip suppliers. These things need very low power communications mainly, low end manufacturers do not do this better than QCOM, it's just QCOM hasn't really focused on it yet. The lower end guys just sort of go after the really low margin markets (3rd world countries) where the the low power matters more than speed, there isn't enough money in that to keep QCOM shareholders happy.

Agree with OP, IOT is dead end, data center is where the known/smart money is

My prediction: IoT will be a hit with people who think Chia Pets are low rent, but who will spend exorbitant amounts of money for any new gadget with a chip in it. Especially if it has a screen!

Iot is real. Qualcomm won't be one that will be driving it though. It will be a bottom of the food chain chip supplier. The creativity of coming up with devices will be elsewhere

IOT/IOE.....smart watch are all useless concepts..... they are like the products on the Skymall magazine in planes.....everything you dont need to buy although the ads show that it is very "useful" and good product.....
