Thread regarding Chesapeake Energy Corp. layoffs

Serious talk for once

I'm sorry but I know there is a lot of BS and joking on this site but if anyone has serious info to provide, I would love to hear it. I have a family and I'm the sole income, I need to know if layoffs are really going to happen.

I think this time around they will start with supervisors and non-managers, re shuffle and then do managers and VPs (if they choose to cut any)

In 2013 they started with upper level management and then it went through the hierarchy for about two months. Some individuals that were involved in the group's that were helping to select individuals being let go were let go themselves, so no one is safe. What to look for, lots of security vehicles and HR folks dressed in black suits. Hope that helps. Also DO NOT vent about your job to anyone. Those people will throw you under the bus to your managers. Trust nobody, keep your head down, do your job, come in early, stay 5 mins late and take 30 min lunches. And most of all, know if you are picked, it doesn't mean you're a bad employee. In 2013, lots of good people were let go.

It is for sure in the next two weeks. I was told by a higher up. I was not told how many. Not trying to scare anyone but yes, unfortunately it is true.

It will be 10-15% across the company probably within the next 2 weeks. If you have noticed the execs and hr have gone under ground. Get your resume up to date, but jobs in OKC are slim!

Depending on where your skills are, I would look at some of the Houston operators in better shape, Hess, Anadarko....you may not like them but if you need a job they may have openings. Also look at a big 5 consulting firm if your skills can fit, IT, accounting, engineering. Don't go near BP or Marathon, both in major layoff mode. Some of the gas drillers in the east are hiring but it's not a large number of positions. Make sure you have personal contact info for other people.

Also, in the previous layoff people were not allowed to go to their office to get keys or medicines etc, so if you need anything like that, keep them in your pocket.

The people who actually know may read this site for entertainment but I don't think anyone with actual knowledge posts it. I truly believe CHK would prefer to avoid a layoff but it seems unavoidable at this point. Just like the other reply mentioned several late Sept early Oct events have been cancelled. Since they were events heavy on employee participation not expense it would seem a layoff would be the reason to cancel. I'm also a sole income household so I pray we get a decent severance and can find something else quickly. My background is not strictly O&G so I'll have to consider returning to previous sectors of the workforce. It would be nice if they could just cut us to 32 hours for awhile so that when it ramps up again they are appropriately staffed but I don't know that a furlough would save us enough money. And I'd guess if it were possible they'd have thought of it already. I'm just doing what I can and praying I keep my job but preparing for the worst.

Agreed, what would it change to "know" layoffs are coming. You won't know if you are one of them or not until it happens. I would recommend you update your resume no matter what and if you can't take the uncertainty then go ahead and find another job. Until prices recover it will be a nasty environment of paranoia. Don't expect the rumors to away after one set of layoffs either. Sorry, it just sucks.

No one is sure if or when they might happen. People usually find out they are being laid off as it happens. My two cents...the stock price is in the shitter, CHK burns more cash than it generates, they have cancelled many events scheduled to occur this month, the majors in the industry have been shedding thousands of jobs, the industry outlook is not too promising, and CHK has the same number of employees we had when oil was $100/bbl. Do what you will armed with that information.
