I has a sad. Qualcomm was the best place I worked for in a 40 year career. About a year ago I met the boyfriend of a long time friend, he is in his 50s, designs analog cirsuits, and had been at QC for about a year. He was not happy. I didn't get it, but he didn't want to talk about it and I didn't push it.
Then I reconnected with another guy that had been at QC since the beginning. He said they'd cancelled the Christmas parties (which were epic) and the picnics (which if you had kids were epic, but I didn't have grandkids at the time). He also said he was thinking of leaving.
Now Steve (whom I worked with for 2 years on Globalstar and think is a good guy) gives 2 months notice he's going to can 15% of his workforce while pivoting away from Paul's bad decisions. Uh, Stevio? Can we talk? Telling everyone that in 2 months you're going to can 15% of the worker bees while collecting an 8 digit salary/bonus is not the way to pump up morale. If you have to do a layoff you do it fast, deep, and git 'er done. You don't drag it out for 4 fricken months. Jeez, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
Then I come here. WTF is with the racist comments? I worked with a lot of H1-Bs. They're mostly good people. Like everyone there are a few who just can't cut it. But I'd say 95% of the H1-Bs are genuinely good people I'd not only welcome as good co-workers and neighbors, but if they want to marry my son/daughter then have at it (well, not so much as my kids have both been married for 10+ years and I've got 4 grandkids. But you get the gist).
The H1-B program is a f***ed up mess. I know that, you know that, the average politician knows that. The difference is that you and I have no influence, and folks like Paul Jacobs buy politicians left and right. Me? If they come in, stay employed and don't get a felony for 3 years, then they're a citizen. Period. If they go to UCSD or somesuch, graduate, work for a year while keeping their nose clean for 1 year, they're a citizen.
For once I'm glad I'm old.
