Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

QC employee from '96 to '08

I has a sad. Qualcomm was the best place I worked for in a 40 year career. About a year ago I met the boyfriend of a long time friend, he is in his 50s, designs analog cirsuits, and had been at QC for about a year. He was not happy. I didn't get it, but he didn't want to talk about it and I didn't push it.

Then I reconnected with another guy that had been at QC since the beginning. He said they'd cancelled the Christmas parties (which were epic) and the picnics (which if you had kids were epic, but I didn't have grandkids at the time). He also said he was thinking of leaving.

Now Steve (whom I worked with for 2 years on Globalstar and think is a good guy) gives 2 months notice he's going to can 15% of his workforce while pivoting away from Paul's bad decisions. Uh, Stevio? Can we talk? Telling everyone that in 2 months you're going to can 15% of the worker bees while collecting an 8 digit salary/bonus is not the way to pump up morale. If you have to do a layoff you do it fast, deep, and git 'er done. You don't drag it out for 4 fricken months. Jeez, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

Then I come here. WTF is with the racist comments? I worked with a lot of H1-Bs. They're mostly good people. Like everyone there are a few who just can't cut it. But I'd say 95% of the H1-Bs are genuinely good people I'd not only welcome as good co-workers and neighbors, but if they want to marry my son/daughter then have at it (well, not so much as my kids have both been married for 10+ years and I've got 4 grandkids. But you get the gist).

The H1-B program is a f***ed up mess. I know that, you know that, the average politician knows that. The difference is that you and I have no influence, and folks like Paul Jacobs buy politicians left and right. Me? If they come in, stay employed and don't get a felony for 3 years, then they're a citizen. Period. If they go to UCSD or somesuch, graduate, work for a year while keeping their nose clean for 1 year, they're a citizen.

For once I'm glad I'm old.

The time frames are governed by California state law, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act: A company with a “covered establishment” that employs 75 employees or more is required to file a WARN notice if it lays-off 50 or more employees during any 30-day period. Employers must give a WARN notice at least 60 calendar days prior to any planned plant closing or mass layoff. When all employees are not terminated on the same date, the date of the first individual termination within the statutory 30-day or 90-day period triggers the 60-day notice requirement. A worker’s last day of employment is considered the date of that worker’s layoff.

Factor in time for evaluation of the workforce and identification of the layoff pool, then you're at the time frames announced. The company would like to minimize the time period, but can't. By law. At least they're waiting until after the next RSU vesting.

@Anonymous148224, the problem with your logic "Thank God for H1Bs" is that you are a moron. You don't see other capitalist countries doing what this country is doing. The big cats have been abusing the system. If it's so great, why is the US only country that exploits foreign workers? The bigger issue here is that the process discourages the next generations of Americans to follow engineer paths and stay away from Tech. Do you see it now? There got to be some sort of protectionism. It's not the same as being entitled. We welcome competition but not in an unfair way such as hiring practices. Lots of smart engineers who were educated at top-notched American universities are unemployed. Do you think they are not good enough to compete with H1Bs? Were you born stupid or you've been working on it since childhood?

Excellent quality post.. Right on about dragging the layoff for 4 months (actually, layoff has been going on since last year - not just 4 mths) I have pleasure to work under Irwin.. PJ was disappointing but Irwin was helping in the beginning along with some great leaders such as Sanjay J (he was tough but he has excellent vision and great leadership skill). Worked with Sanjay J before, he was hands on, engaged, and able to make fast decision. For every new chip, Sanjay was engaged asking bring up problems.. Awesome spirit.

Now, with Steve, my gosh.. Had worked with Steve before, and he has no vision, no drive, not able to make decision, ..

I started in '93. Great place to work. I wish everyone could have the opportunity to work in a fast growing, leading edge company like QCOM was. The people whining about H1Bs need to grow up and compete. The beauty of capitalism is that you can go as far as you're capable of. If you're not very capable, then get out of the way of those who are and quit complaining that some people have more than you do. Too many people feel entitled and not enough are taking advantage of the incredible opportunities this country offers to those who are smart and driven. Thank God for H1Bs. Without them, we'd only be a shadow of what we are.

Thanks for a great post.

When the layoffs were announced our VP had an all hands. He shared that he was going on vacation. He agreed that it was lousy timing but as he said the trip was already paid for. I mean WTF :)

I don't care if the trip is to the Vatican to personally get blessed by the pope you stay home when you are laying off that many people.

There is a general lack of empathy.

thanks cool post I worked there around the same time, and left to start a real estate business. After PJ took charge I did not like working there. His dad was one of the best people I have ever met. I think Steves salary is an outrage, it sends a terrible message to the employees and reminds my I am so happy I am no longer an engineer

great post. i was a long time qc'er as well - left a few years ago when i felt the place had lost its way and figured this day would come at some point. my only regret is not leaving earlier and squandering more of my career there. the qc of today isn't close to what it was when I started, and that sucks. the practices and policies of qct ruined the place, imho.
