Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

GOMBU whats changed RCA

CVX Method of learning changed. What once was a " master and apprentice" system where a "can do" supervisor directly instilled "can do" skills into an underling has been replaced with "group learning" where everyone shares experiences and learns together! Sounds nice until the realization takes hold that no one really knows anything and specialists are called it to do actual work (typically contractors or 3rd party services) and division of work into wafer thin specialties that leads to more and more growth. This "blind leading the blind" leads to "group think" where difference of opinion is deemed "uncorporative" and "disruptive". Example " Risks Assessments" where a room full of well meaning but technical and field experience idiots dominate. Indepependant OCs still use the first method. The majors don't especially CVX . One reason many people Albeit mostly the wrong ones will lose their jobs!

Anonymous150057's on the right track. It shouldn't be such a monumental paradigm shift for the "shape up or ship out" model. But we all know it would be difficult to hack through the red tape. What I find most frustrating is that accountability is one of the two focal points (along with responsibility) in the Chevron Way Values. "Integrity...We accept responsibility and hold ourselves accountable for our work and our actions."

Have you ever tried to fire somebody in Chevron?, HR is going to have to remove lot of the barriers they've installed over the years.

In the new Chevron, after these layoffs are all over, I hope the company will implement a strict rule of ACCOUNTABILITY. Each job position will have its key job responsibilities and if the person holding the position doesn't produce to a certain standard, regardless of class (gender, race, etc.), they go into a probation period of 6 months. If their standards are subpar, they are TERMINATED. Just that simple. Every employee will sign an agreement to this understanding. This notion of "blind leading the blind" and "group think" will be challenged.

First it takes years to master the Why Tree not a class given to a group of young inexperienced kids or displaced professionals that finds themselves in the II&R department. The litmus test of great RCA's is that you don't have the same incidents happening over and over....at GOMBU take a look at our RCA's and the same things happen over and over. Inexperienced facilitators stop at symptoms not systematic causes. Management system root causes severs the weed at the root never having it grow again causing the same incidents This is wide spread throughout Chevron. Not just GOMBU. Chevron has a liability when they have a document that continuously points out symptoms and incidents keep occurring. Pull out the RCA's and you will see the same incidents happening over and over......it's madness. You will be bullied, marginalized or fired if you do this. That's why Chevron is failing at all levels. Even during the process no one indicates a,problem as the OP said you will be labeled. There are many many great systems other than Why Tree. We don't have the experience at any level at any BU in II&R. Eventually the symptoms that are not root causes lead to fatalities. You also loss off everyone involved in the process as they know it's not going to fix anything. The process creates useless and I pick my words carefully....and dangerous action items. There is a good saying that applies to Chevron in spades. Make reporting and incident much more painful that not reporting and you will find no one will report. Why would they? I am a Navy Nuke and from 1 to 100 we were at 95. Chevron is at -50. The process actually causes incidents and promotes fatalities. Again I choose my words carefully.

"blind leading the blind" - this is so true today, I've been with the company for over 20 years and I 100% agree with your observations here
