Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

90% of the Comments Posted Here are Clearly Not CoP Employees

If you are really an employee, and want answers, go to a town hall. Ask someone else about what was said in their town hall. Read the severance policy - which is published and available on the internal web and maybe even external website. Retirement policy has been in place for years, and yet there are still stupid comments made here that are completely wrong. I'm not management, I have little love for what Ryan is doing, but things posted here are a waste of space. Whining about no Bartlesville party? Boo hoo. When all is said and done, this is going to be a lean company. Similar to what Conoco and Phillips were each before the merger. It's going to crank out cash and have performance metrics as good as its peers. But getting thru the next couple of months, and maybe a couple of years after that is going to be lean. That said, don't let the stuff on this site steer you wrong. I'd hate to see an employee make a move or a decision based on what is posted here. You are going to feel really stupid when you find out otherwise. I came here because someone told me about something they read here. At first I thought it was all funny, then disheartening that people worried about their jobs might be thinking they can learn something inside here.

Finally, I have been thru a few of these in my career. People that get consumed by the latest rumor, what x said about y, etc, etc. I guess this is the new age where we can read about it on a blog, or a website even. Those people consumed by this stuff are easy to spot at work. As they are by supervisors as well. Those people who have to make the decision on who to keep and who to severe, and you are showing up as someone who cannot take the pressure, and not concentrating on getting your work done. Keep your head down. Nothing you can do otherwise is going to improve your chance of staying employed.

The kids are smart and do have a work ethics but do no have opportunities for work of value. $75,000 a year IT new hires are doing the equivalent of data entry work managing user id information for the email system. The kids master the role in the matter of days or hours and then discover the rotational roles remain for another 6-12 months. The new hires are exploring other job opportunities within week of the end of the original 3 month orientation to the company.

These damn kids now days are smart, but they have no work ethic. They think being smart and cool is all you have to do. They don't expect to actually have to do any work. That's for people who are not as smart and cool as they are. Well, now that you got rid of all us dumb uncool old guys, who's going to do the work? It's going to take more than just going to meetings and giving PowerPoints.

Hey DamnKids, read it again. I was quoting another poster - those aren't my words in quotes. Just FYI, I am one of the old guys. I have a lot of old guy friends that work there, and a few that already got caught up in the system. And a lot of young ones that I mentor. Not sure where you are coming from, but if you read that post of mine again, I think the only thing I said was severance pay is probably going to incentivize a lot of the older guys to leave. I know that for a fact, judging from what some of my old guys co-workers have told me. Some of the managers are ok with this. It's a tough spot for even them to be in. You have 55 yr old plus employees that are the backbone, that volunteer to go, and its easiest just to take them. But then you are left with a big void of experience. But at this point, you cannot motivate someone to stay that is already thinking leave. Hell, you've been paying RSU's and retention units, and VCIP bumps. That has barely maintained status quo. What can you do going forward? For people who look at the scale of change and say its not the company I have spent most of my career in, and its been lucrative enough, and I would just rather move on.

Oh, and my point regarding the cycle of oil is just that - it is cyclical. If you cannot deal with that, then you need to look at another industry. It's survival for periods, and then take it to the bank for periods. We are just coming off a take it to the bank period. Look at it, there have been retention bonus programs for the last three years, and now there are layoffs. Just recognize what it is for what it is, and decide to put up with it. Or not. And yeah, I have got over 30 years, with the same company. So with all due respect, don't lecture me on what you know about us old guys.

Let me say, There's alot of "OLD" folks that look at this board and maybe we should get canned for working our ass off and "WANTING" to work for "ONE" company through our career. I can't tell you how many times an "OLD GUY" saved by butt from making a huge mistake. "OLD TIMERS" like me don't cry and whine about the cycle of oil, we continue to put our best out front and "HOPE" the younger folks step up to the plate. If Conocophillips falls flat on it's ass, It's not the "OLD GUYS" that did it, it's the "NEW GENERATION" that expects "SOMETHING FOR NOTHING".

Ok, so I read blood pressure and thought blood sugar. So shoot me. And yeah, I have been an employee for many years, and hopefully not more than a few weeks more. It's time to move on. Not sure what worthless crap is given out at town halls. Only ones I have been to have just been presentations. You guys keep posting worthless crap. Is there anything of value that you have said? Yeah, so I am "pro town hall". You are not? Good, then get your info from rumor boards like this. If you are an employee, my guess is that you are one of the ones chasing his/her tail just trying to hear the latest rumor, and will soon be rewarded for your exceptional work in the meantime. And I hope that laid off people are not really the large percentage of posters - I think not, having known many of them - and wasting their time here. Jobs are plentiful if you have the technical skill sets. Move on. Honestly, the bigger question is - if you are a young person in your career - whether you want to stay in this industry or not. Look back and look at the 80's. It was a long spell of low oil prices and profits, before we all were rewarded with the boom.

Of course somepeople who work for this great organization and are pro townhalls do not know the difference between blood sugar and blood pressure! That what makes COP the great company it is going to be!

The site is called "The Layoff" and so yes a large percentage of the posters are no longer employees of ConocoPhillips due to the layoffs. And yes current hires and new hires are reconsidering career goals and objectives and walking to other employers. ConocoPhillips is an old boys club desperate to not be an old boys club. Unfortunately the old boys are in the process of layoffs involving those hired to dilute the old boys club. Unfortunately the end result will be a waiting game for the old boys to die or retire. In the interim all employees other than the WASP will explore options elsewhere.

The questions were asked at town halls and the responses focused on the lack of a business plan for $50 oil as the business model ceased to function at $60 oil. Asked and answered. Thank you very much.

Hmmm, town halls I have been to did not have refreshments. Is that your reference to increased blood sugar. Guess I am in the wrong organization. Or you haven't been to a town hall. Are you an employee? Just FYI, look at what the other poster wrote about the exploration town hall. Info presented there answers 90% of the questions asked here, or contradicts the rumors or misinformation posted here.

Town halls? Yeah right. I bet you are not a COP employee!

Let's hear the same story over na d over every townhall with how this cycle all started back in october of last year!

If you are feeling fainty all day and running a low blood pressure, that's when you go to a townhall.... to swing your blood pressure from low to high!
