151377: No, it's not bribery. The contractor has no say in whether you actually get the job. It's merely an alternative method of payment that both parties would either agree to or not. Both methods are ontingent on you getting the job. The single payment arrangement is just to keep the contractor safe. Because once the employer hands your paycheck over to a body shop that is located overseas, based on a contract that you signed, and whose only presence in this country is a P.O. Box that is essentially a mail drop, all bets are off as to whether you ever see your share. Good luck taking him to court if you can't serve him personally, and he doesn't have an agent for service in CA.

@Anonymous151295 - that would include bribery and you'd be liable and likely prosecuted under RICO act

So-Cal Edison pays F/T employees really well. Historically, they also pay consultants top dollar. He's taking at least a third off the top. Probably more if he works for a body shop and is greedy instead of one of the bigger tech companies. Tell him you just turned down an offer for $40 for what sounds like the same job, and see if he comes up. Be wary of the words "W-2 employer." All that means is that the company pays him, and he takes his cut before passing the rest onto you. If the company's HQ is NOT in this country, don't sign unless someone in your family is a "hit man" in Mumbai or Taiwan. If you are desperate or really want the job, and you think the employer will want you, Tell him you will pay a flat fee up front (from your GTFO package) discounted by AT LEAST 30%. (Time value of money, and all that....) Then tell him to take it or leave it. Report back and tell us your experiences. If we work together, we can either drive up the prices for contract labor, or even better, get the employers to deal directly.

Thats great... If you are a blue collar unskilled worker....If you are a Q engineer worth your salt, that would be an insult... I'll still with my $170k/year base salary software job that was just offered to me in San Diego. Now I just need to hold on for 1 more week to see if I get a GTFO package too.
