Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Working at Exxon vs Chevron

I've worked 3 projects as a contractor for Exxon, and now have been a Chevron employee for the last 4 years. The two companies are completely different in attitude. At Exxon, they almost expect you to work an extra 10-12 hours per week. 40 hour weeks do not exist. Here at Chevron, people show up late and leave early every day, and nobody seems to care about that. They also do not have the 9/80 schedule, it is 5 long days per week - usually 10-12 hrs a day. Pay is comparable between the two, until you factor in the extra hours at Exxon. Casual Fridays at Exxon consist of dress slacks and button up shirts with a collar. No jeans, no sneakers, no t-shirts. It is a very old fashioned company, too many stiffs work there. Overall, I find the people at Chevron easier to work with, and have more outgoing personalities and leadership characteristics. At Exxon, you have to wait your turn to be a leader, they will smack you down if you try to step up too early. You just do your job there. That being said, I would rate the management at Exxon as much better than Chevron. They promote managers who are experts in their field, and are proven top-level performers. They penalize these managers when they are wrong. At Chevron, I've mostly found incompetent managers who just have good personalities. They can blow millions in change orders, and still keep their job. That is a problem, there needs to be a balance of both of these situations. Chevron is horrible at demoting or firing managers, which is a shame.

You should never have more than 10% of your 401k in the company you work for. Its seems employees never learn this basic knowledge , Every year I move company stock to the SPY 500 ETF or equivalent

eopqx, Would you mind reposting that in English please, dear? We do not speak gutter punk gibberish here, thanks! Until then, whatever nonsensical point you were attempting to get across is lost.

This is a great discussion. Just look at FGP which is a CVX Exxon jv. Chevron management was incapable of executing the project and exxon took over. The chevron change orders at the Korean module yard are sinful. No accountability. Cvx managers in Korea all probably given pay grades and fat bonuses

How is this related to layoffs? I'm also baffled. Please explain. None of these guys are hiring either.

Chevron is on the cusp of imploding. They pay huge dividends to shareholders to stall the stock decline.

This is an intresting post. I am in a position to pick between exxon and chevron and cocacola. Am in IT and am confused. I just care about career advancement. Do they promote people at chevron. Do they recognise talents. If they dnt fire managers, how do millenials become managers

Would you rather be part of the potential 30% being laid off at the wonderful systems oriented Shell of part of the potential 20% being laid off at the lousy people oriented Chevron?

It doesn't matter how Shell operates. They aren't hiring!! They laid off 1 in 3 employees.

Shell has its own set of problems but it is not a systems driven company. It is engineering driven. Staff supports functions....it's much more decentralized and embedded. I thought Shell was bad until I came to Chevron. This is the worst of the worse.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the Exxon comparisons because my immediate concern is the difference between the two companies. Now if several people would speak ad nauseam about Shell, I'm sure my current ROM situation would improve dramatically.

This is a very accurate description. We say work at Chevron, invest in Exxon. The quality of employees in Excon management is top notch.
