Bloated IT Dept

Is it just me or does anyone else think the IT dept is seriously bloated? Do they really need that many people to run the show? I just can't understand why they employee so many admins and analysts over there.....I think you could cut 1/2 to 2/3s of the entire dept and still get the job done. Hey IT dept, have you ever considered doing more with less or is that a new concept for you? No you say? You'll just throw another FTE at the problem. Sure why not. We've got he money

I work in IT and half the folks are just in meetings all day not doing shit as far as productivity goes. As much as I hate to admit it we could stand to have some deep cuts. I just hope it's not me. This all day everyday meeting shit has to stop. People are having meetings about meetings in my verticle. Ridiculous....the writing is all over the wall. People are just in denial remembering what this company used to be. The gig is up. The fat lady is singing but you just keep the ear plugs in and maybe you won't hear her.

Jesus. Some posts here demonstrate people have no idea what IT does. IT is not just helpdesk. Helpdesk is a great place to start your career. Good web/app developers and business analysts can save a company more money than most positions. IT has the ability to make all jobs function more efficiently. IT isn't simply a guy that unjams the printer or reconnects your monitor. The work that IT does can automate and integrate the terribly fragmented processes and applications we have now. I would argue THE smartest people in CHK work in IT. and NO, I don't work in IT. I just understand what it takes to make a company of this size & geographic scope work.

Right.... Outsource IT and save a ton of money.... That might have been the case in 2005, but the truth is global IT salaries have increased with IT sourcing companies. If think outsourced IT is cheaper, you are out of touch.

Clearly you don't understand how IT works and its function to keep the business running. Land is bloated.

Agree. IT and Land need cut in half! Or just outsource all of IT and save a ton of money.

Plenty of other groups that are far more overloaded than IT. Land for example needs to be a tiny fraction of what it is now

The share price is lower than our peers. I know dat cuz du alligader eats du big nuhmber! You're a sharp bag of D's! The share price is too low because of the IT employee count. You should write that up and see if you can get you're very own Seeking Alpha page!! The extremely high short interest (top 5 of the SP500!!) has nothing to do with stock price being low. The legacy debt obligations and lower realized pricing on our gas in Appalachia don't matter either. It is the IT employee count. I'm so glad you've opened my eyes to this!

Yeah, you can spin it that way if you want. Like it or not, share price is king. How are we doing on that front compared to our peers?

I don't work in IT, but I have a very deep understanding of MIS. The IT department is not bloated, the only way we can get employees doing more work is by investing in technology. The IT department is the only way we can continue to be an industry leader in technology. Did you know there are IT projects that have given us a unique advantage over our peers? Due to these investments, we now hold a unique competitive advantage that our peers cannot invest in due to the oil price collapse.
