Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

If you are in Engineering, you are a life long student.

You have to moon light 2 hours a day with coursera courses & work 12 hours a day in QC waiting for API or dabbling with some build.

Those coming from foreign countries have their homelands as back up but what do Americans have? A ponzi scheme called social security?

lmao at "rm -rf /bin/laden" lol.. good one!.. yah, engineers are life-long learners. There are tons of folks regretting for not getting out of the profession fast enough. Once you're in your mid 40's/early 50's, you'll have other responsibilities with kids, families, old parents, mortgages etc.. your energy is all drained out.. it's not that you can't keep up with technologies.. it's just that you don't enough energy to fuel whatever you want to do professionally.. most other professions tend to be the opposite.. the older you get, the more comfortable/valuable you'll become.. hence, the jobs are more relaxing.. years ago, I used to work for Boeing. They started moving jobs to other states and laid off employees in CA because CA became more expensive to do businesses in. Some laid off engineers I knew actually went back to dental, optometry, and medical schools... i thought these guys were nuts.. but I guess now they might have had a better long-term vision than I had. I wish them well.

Capitalism is the worst form of economic system, except for all those other systems that have been tried from time to time.

Stop whining and blaming H1-B for everything from global warming to gas prices. At least we have access to coursera to re-train ourselves thanks to technology. The blue collar workers didn't have any such facility when their jobs got shipped to China. No one is immune from technological change, not even doctors. Expert systems and AI are advancing at rapid enough pace that in few years we wont need to see doctors for routine ailments. The days of cruising to retirement after getting our college degree are long over. The bubble has burst and all those people who thought QC job - paying 150k for dabbling with builds and collecting status - is their life long entitlement have to now roll up their sleeves and retrain themselves.
