Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

really depressed..

I am really depressed. can't sleep. Not sure if I will have a job next week. Don't have any energy left for job hunting thanks to 40+ years of life.

Can't see well thanks to long hours. Family don't like me because I keep pushing them to excel in what they do.

Parents don't have good health. Not sure what I did all my life. Can't be proud of heritage. Too many people with same skill set.

can't sleep. No recognition.. No life.

good comments - its never too late to recenter yourself - the young low level subordinates should be thinking carefully given that your mgr/leads are making you work 60-80 hrs/week this will be the case years after years

I am typically not one to post positive messages. But I feel your pain. I have gone through a lot myself this year as a matter fact I have already been let go. There have been some people let go earlier than others I suppose and I was one of them . My parents are in failing health my relationship is falling apart, obviously I lost my job. The IRS is all over me like a pitbull in heat. And I have been struggling ever since. The unemployment department didn't help me. I never received a single check. I am in bad shape myself. I called the suicide hotline. That's how 0.068 bad things got. I have been sober for almost 30 years and I started drinking again. I understand your predicament. I'm not sure what to do. I am thinking of becoming a bum in Ocean Beach. They have a less to worry about than we do. Drunkenness and ignorance is bliss

This sounds like waaaay more than being layed off concerns.

Layoffs are life events that are hard to avoid. Just life. Honestly many end up better

off someone else down the road a few years. It's tough at first but most land on their feet doing something.

Talk to someone professional. Do NOT be prideful or let ego get in

the way of that.

OP: From this point for at least another week, nothing you do will really matter w/r/t the job. So look to a different direction for general motivation. If you have always been meaning to get in shape--or even if you are in shape, spend an hour or two in the QCOM gym and do it. It will cut down on stress. If you are not a gym person, be active is a social hobby that you enjoy--e.g. target shooting, chess, etc. While you are there, network with people you know, and act like a person for a change. You never know if one of these people will be in a position to help you in your future job hunt. Keep up this habit after the coming week as often as possible, as there may be at least one more layoff. Perfect your resume. If you are potentially good at more than one aspect of the industry, make separate resumes for each. These should be your primary goal for the following week.

To OP: As one fellow human being to another, I am praying for you this morning, and I will continue to pray you and your family throughout this week. I just want you to know that there are people who care for you.

Please get help if you feel immobilized. You will get past this and maybe you aren't getting laid off. You don't know yet

Qualcomm is giving you a gift to pause and consider your life. Take it and figure out what you really want to be doing....

Why the long face? I have the opposite viewpoint... My kids, after decades of me telling them to be the best, have all been self-motivated high achievers. One's going to med school, one's going to Harvard Law. During my past nearly 20 years at the Q, I was able to work at the hottest company, and the financial benefits allowed us to own our house free and clear, put two kids through colleges without the need for financial aid, allow us to grow my investments outside of engineering, letting my wife start her retail business years ago that is doing well, and left us with a nice sizable retirement cushion both in 401k/IRAs and after tax accounts. Of the late, I've been spending more time with my wife and more time with my hobbies, both on the track, and in the gun club. Well, I should say that has happened long before this entire layoff thing. But with a pending layoff, it will give me more time to do other things I've always wanted to. I do have a few old contacts thats were asking me if I was interested in joining their startups, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to commit to working long hours, so as an alternative, maybe I'll just be a part time consultant for them. I think I'm about to take about a 2 month vacation in Europe since the exchange rate is so ridiculously low, but my wife who is so passionate about her business doesn't want to take an extended downtime....
