Thread regarding Baker Hughes Inc. layoffs

Next week Halliburton is switching to hourly pay for field hands. They copy from Baker Hughes.

In order to be revenue neutral, Halliburton decides to follow Baker Hughes and switches to hourly rate. In another word, big pay cut for their field hands. Welcome to Baker world of hourly rate and reduced income. Halliburton's employees are now left struggling to adjust their lives to fit within this abrupt income loss. The energy giant did not give the employees any warning about these cuts to allow them to make adjustments accordingly. Management themselves are not affected by the change. The only employees that received this income hit were the ones who absolutely could not afford to lose income.

Halliburton was hourly for decades until sometime in about 2005 and they changed peoples titles and put them on salary. Drivers were hourly. Then they came up with some kind of bonus program that was different for each department. For the most part you had no control over your bonus as it was a very socialistic affair. Someone 200 miles away could wreck your bonus, wonderful. Some people got job bonuses and many had their hourly pay cut by 50%. All were told they would love it. There were some operators in the field that figured out how to get double bonuses per day x 3.

Guys, keep in mind that there was a lawsuit between Baker and some field hands regarding not getting paid for hours they worked and violation of certain state laws. The lawsuit even included dates that were before Baker officially switched to hourly, so there is a good reason to pay hourly, to avoid these lawsuits. What was vague about day rate was that it did not factor in how many hours in a day you worked. You could have worked 24+ hours and still get paid the same as someone that worked 12. It needed to get addressed from a legal standpoint.

I am sure they will take best practice from each company. One example, cramming HAL's allowing employees the joy of paying 30 % of medical costs rather than the industry standard of 20 % down BHI employees throats.
