Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Wonder if the Teamsters would be interested in groundbreaking attempt to sign up engineers? At QC we are no longer professionals anyway

It's just a sweatshop for heads...add sewing machines to the lab benches and it would be complete. And I think that attempting to lay off employees involved in union organizing is a nice lawsuit. Just sayin..

Unionization brings its own set of evils. Aside from the dues, there is the party line voting, which I personally don't agree with, because I've never voted a straight party ticket in my life. Then there are strikes and walkouts every time the union thinks the benefits should be better or the pay higher. Well, hell yes! Who doesn't want higher pay and better benefits. But what will the union do for you when the employer gives up attempting to bargain in good faith and says screw you! I'll lay you off and replace you with H1-B workers! Or worse, we'll just pack up the whole freaking chip plant and send it overseas. Then you are essentially paying dues for the same sort of outcome you have now. Better to just have your own peaceful protest.

OP: From my past experience, the hours you spend at the office, working or otherwise, has nothing to do with the bonus amount. In most cases, it has nothing to do with your performance either! Mostly, it's just profit sharing based on your title and seniority. How could it be anything else, since your line manager, tech lead and director has no idea what you're really up to.

The point is the publicity, not actually joining the union. This isn't 1952 on the waterfront...thugs are long gone. Nobody could be more corrupt than SM, PJ, et al

NO WAY!

Unions are nothing but legalized mafia.

Shakedowns, dues, strong arming, thugs.

NO!

This would actually be a good idea. I'm generally anti-union, especially government employee unions, but I do it think engineers could use some leverage to fight back against outsourcing of jobs and the sometimes very long hours we have to put in. We are, in most cases, compensated with bonus pay, but that may be going away for QC engineers.
