Any insight on why we have hired so many engineers in Permian Unconventional?

Justin Garner's group has 10 drilling engineers running 1 rig. Even if we ramped up to 10 rigs, why would we need 1 engineer per rig when the norm is 1 engineer runs 1-2 rigs? It doesn't seem sustainable. What other company has that sort of engineer to rig ratio? I came from Anadarko and we never had drilling engineers share a rig...

Permian is the next big thing for COP. While there will certainly be adjustments to the team like everywhere, you can bet the company is taking care of the early process team to allow the cash register to ring in 2017

Because Mabee is an incompetent huckster who surrounded himself with like-minded sycophants. The dissenting voices were transferred or severed, leaving toadies who do not understand unconventional development or projects. The worst project disaster in COP that has degraded performance wise and expanded incompetent people wise since January. Morale and performance sucks, though life is good of you are one of his rectal parasites...and you "networking/IMing" bull$hitters know who you are!

Mabee there's a management problem in PU. That asset could be run more effectively with one third of the staff if the AM had any management skills.

Yes but when you were with Anadarko how many meetings did you have per day/week. I was also with an independent and had one meeting per week. Now I am lucky to only have one meeting per day. It is hard to be as productive as an independent when a third of your work week is spent in meetings that have nothing to do with drilling wells.

What about the fact that there are 17 completions engineers in Permian right now with 3-4 rigs running? Seems to me, Upper management just wants to grow their empires... It's about time we start acting like a true independent. Investors will begin to notice our earnings/employee are much lower than our peers, stock price will drop and we will continue having lay offs. I hope someone in the COST team has noticed this issue and recommended that we do not hire new folks for another 5-10 years. Instead of hiring a bunch of people when oil is 80+ and then laying off the poor folks that decided to work for us when oil prices go down, let's gradually increase the responsibilities of our employees and keep the headcount constant.
