Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Feel sick and sad

I used to work for another company where there also was a huge layoff. The CEO was like any other CEO, tough and aggressive in language and attitude. But during the bad time when cost reductions was in order, he sent out a company wide email asking people to vote if they would opt for 10% RIF or 10% cut in paycheck across the board (including ALL executives).. That was his way of saying we are in this together and we will try to get through it together. ........ There are layoffs in a lot of tech companies, and people react as expected, not too surprising. But the reaction here is downright sick and some makes your stomach hurl. Hard to see human beings can go so low. It is a job at the end of the day and folks should be able to find another. Granted it may require relocation, well that's life.... Also the things that have emerged about this workplace through this site is appalling. Who would in their right mind want to stay here. Unless there is a huge fixup and house cleaning done immediately, I don't see any reason why stay here. I don't see this clean up happening anytime soon. There seems to be debates on obvious issues and huge tolerance for questionable behavior and characters..... Just too sad...

My first comment on this site: The sickening comments here is not the norm at QC. I have had, and continue to have great friends, colleagues, reports, & leads at QC. I continue to have the highest regard for them. It is a shame that there are a few sick minds here that are pulling each other down into abyss. Any positive thought is crushed by tagging them as "HR/Manager" with ulterior motives. Certain amount of gloating and self importance is alright but being down right disrespectful of other teams/colleagues in IT, Admin, Corp R&D, HR is just not the norm. Some of the comments are so wrong, that if ever said in public - they would be criminally prosecuted. Sickening comments are encouraged in the name of venting on this site. What rubbish! What kind of moral education/culture approves of such hateful comments? Thankfully no culture on Planet Earth is this bad. Its just that the sick minds are way too loud here, they do not represent any culture/any human. I cant even see if all the hate filled/criminal comments are from one single person. I so wish there was another tolerant online community where we could help our colleagues, and support them in these tough times.

I should have stated " There was a need for huge layoff"...my point was that the CEO took the employees concerns seriously and worked to resolve it WITH them as "in we are all in this together"..... It was a mid size company...In such a large company as Q, I don't think this voting thing is practical, as at this point there is a lot and a lot of redundant resource that needs to be fixed.

Just to add there was still some people let gone (I found out later)... But I think it was mostly fat trimming... Not a publicized layoff...

We ended up getting a 10% pay cut... Which went on for I think roughly 11 months or so...don't recall been a while...

What was the results of the vote? ie, perhaps it was 90% in favor of the RIF and about 10% for the pay cut???

As you mentioned there was a layoff, so he simply RIFed the 10% in favor of the pay cut???

I would indeed prefer this employee interactive approach
