Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Why did Steve give a 2 month heads up about the layoffs?

Not a QC'er (retired from QC back when it was a great company with Christmas parties). I've been though lots of layoffs, about a 60/40 split of survived/slashed. I never in a 40 year career saw anyone say "yeah, in 2 months I'm gonna lay off 15% of my workforce". I mean, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? You wanna kill morale, you just did it. Every layoff I went through there were signs and signals, but management was always "nope, no layoffs imminent. Not happening. There's the grindstone, put your noses to it". And if I read this board right those laid off have to work 2 more months to get the severance package. Again, whiskey tango foxtrot? Joe got laid off, you really thing having him clear out his desk and GTFO is worse then giving him 2 months to plot revenge, then act on it?

While I'm at it, WTF is a PIP?

And we had some really great Christmas parties didn't we. Back in the good ol' days. Been gone since 2008 (small RIF at that time). But still like to keep up with the going on's. I'm so sorry to hear of yet another RIF. Dang, I remember back when Kyocera bought out building V, and we had to tell who was going to KYC (by no choice of their own). Hated that. Most of my original co-workers are now gone as well.

Poster about the WARN act is correct. 60 days notice are required for layoffs of 500 people or more within a 30 day period.

Local laws in SD require 60 days of notice for employee reduction this large... That's the only reason.

PIP = Performance Improvement Plan not "Process" Improvement Plan. That said, it is correct that it is a QC Plan to de-hire the individual being "PIP'ed" and cover themselves from a lawsuit.

@ Anonymous154226 is correct - the announcement was to calm the street as the financial results were dismal. So they mixed layoff news with dismal financials and manage to slow down the stock price drop. He had no options here, he was forced to do it as Jana was requiring a prompt reaction.

Is because he is a moron careless who is just confirming his lack of knowledge to lead a strong company, he could be a good engineering manager but not a CEO....results tells all

My gratitude is endless for the last 3 years of my 30+ year carrier when I finally were able to make a living!

  1. Q health plan in the future is one of the very worsts in the US once the subsides stops. And I mean not the worst in this industry, but the worst of the worst. I've seen other company health plans and this change is a killer in year 3.

  2. No more RSUs for you.

  3. No more bonuses for you.

  4. No more COLA for you.

Time to move on.

If qc only gave you 2 weeks or only 1 day notice, you'd be bitching about that.

  1. You don't get it both ways

  2. Life is not fair

  3. Your entitlement repulses everyone who doesn't work at qc, and some that do

  4. How about some gratitude for a great health plan (try working at any other company and guess what moron? You pay premiums, deductible, and co-pay!

  5. You get rsus or have stock options and espp

  6. 401k match

2 months allows you to make plans, look for another job, figure it out. This is actually a blessing unless you spent the entire time feeling sorry for yourself and bitching to anyone that'll liste. If you did that, you deserve to be fired, not rif'ed.

We live in a capitalistic society, the best in the world. Sink or swim, but entitlement will make you sink!!

Q: Why did Steve give a 2 month heads up about the layoffs?

Ans : because he needed to give Wall street, some good news in an attempt to balance out the terrible earnings, and keep the stock from really really tanking.

Google the "WARN" act. Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN). A company planning a "large" layoff is required by law to give both employees affected, and the community, 60 days notice.

And let me add to the comment below, that PIPs are usually a last resort, after QC's usual tactics of bullying and harassing someone into quitting haven't worked!

PIP stands for Process Improvement Plan. When a manager wants to get rid of an employee, they put them on a PIP, a detailed plan of goals and behaviors that must be met in a certain time frame. They're usually full of nebulous language with subjective guidelines for evaluation so it's impossible for the employee to deliver. At the end of the given time frame, the employee, having not met the impossible goals, is fired with cause. I've only ever see these used when an incompetent manager had a personal problem with an employee and was being vindictive or trying to pin a work team's lack of success on scapegoat to deflect attention from their own shortcomings.

My wife gave me 2 months notice about a possible divorce. It's been close to 2 months and I still do not know if she was serious! In the last month and a half, I have done nothing and have been a nervous wreck!

It is good that affected people have 2 months to get over it, but year end is a bad timing as nov-dec is not exactly a hiring period.

He is trying to be transparent and show that he cares. But your right, morale is so low that no one cares anymore until this phase is done. He must have gotten a new handbook on corporate lay off policy or something and trying it out.
