Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Should I join a start up if I'm on h1B. Looking for some real advice. Trolls and racist folks, please do not reply. You've said enough.

@157530: I worked at both types and agree 100% with your statement; turn over in startups is usually quite high because employees get burnt out; it is because there is uncertainty about whether or not the startup will be able to make it. Definitely not for everybody

I would join ISIS over any startup. They have much better finances so you are less likely to be laid off.

Things to find out about the startup from the company

  1. Are they are Cash flow positive?

2 Are they EBITDA positive?

  1. What is their revenue range, how has it grown?

This will get you an idea about whether they are doing well, what stage they are in.

  1. In crunchbase you can see how much funding has been received. Ask them about that.

  2. Negotiate options (vesting, expected payout, etc)

  3. When to negotiate pay, ask them for benefits. Usually they benefits expenses are higher than Q. So, you should try to negotiate for that.

I'm a native born US citizen so I have no experience with the visa process but I've worked at both startups and big companies so I'll tell you a few things you should consider.

One thing you would need to consider about immigration status is the way a startup does terminations. At a big company nobody ever gets fired per se they get layed off and there is usually some warning, then some official notice time, then some severance pay, At a startup if they run out of money or your boss is disappointed in you then you could be layed off immediately or even flat out fired with zero warning, zero notice, and zero severance package. Maybe not even get your last paycheck for time already worked.

Obviously the "best" job for you depends on a lot of things but in general right now I would say the benefits of a startup would be more exciting work environment and wider range of work experience. The cons are longer hours and less money. It's very unlikely you will make more money at a startup over the long haul than working for a big company - unless you are a founder. Those days are gone.

The following blog is anti-startup but might want to read the following: https://michaelochurch.wordpress.com/2012/07/08/dont-waste-your-time-in-crappy-startup-jobs/

Like I said I don't have to deal with immigration issues so you'll have to figure out how those risks affect your immigration status, your career, and your life.

Good luck.

There is nothing wrong in joining a startup on H1B, but if the startup fails then you are again in the same situation. Hence, that should be your last option. Ofcourse its better to be in startup than stay without any job.

In startup pressure is very high and you may end up doing job of 2 people because there is not enough structural/technical/financial resources. Some people enjoy it but it is not for everybody; if you are an exceptional programmer, go for it.

If you like it, go for it. It's a tough job man. It's not for everyone. There is a ton of risk, and 1 in 10 will make it. If you are smart, and pick carefuly, your chances will be better. I was with i2 in 1990s and it was an awesome ride. Then we crashed. I do not know how it works with H1Bs though. Good luck and I hope you make it work.

Also, I don't think just any company can sponsor H1-B visa holders. They have to meet certain criteria. ICE must have this information on a website, somewhere. Qualcomm isn't the only company that has laid off H1-Bs.

if they are ready to continue(sponsor) your H1B then nothing is wrong with joining Startup company.

But getting a sponsorship for green card may become difficult, so, don't stay there for longer time
