Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

The round that just ended today will not fix anything. It is a mere cost reduction not a cultural revolution.

Expect the same people, cliques, practices, politics to endure. If you didn't have closure by receiving a green envelope, expect months of political grinding, new market realities, new management shifts, mediocre moving up, innovation stalling. Thanks to all for revealing and educating us on things we would never know about out own work place. Without disregard for the affected people, I feel this was an unnecessary small scale practical move with huge negative psichological effects on all.

"3s and below let go. Only low performing people."

Who decided they were "low performing" . How objective was that judgement. I have found in my 30 years of service to the tech industry that most managers make mostly subjective judgements on performance. Either they like you or they don't and that predetermined the rating.

I am sure we lost a lot of hard working engineers and those of us left behind Will have to work twice the hours we are now. Ok obviously it's not possible to work 100+ hours per week so schedules will slip and the manager will cover his sorry ass by giving us low productivity ratings. So more good engineers will be axed in next round.

QC is now in the run of the mill tech company ranks with the like of AMD or Marvell.

You really hit the nail on the head. Nothing has changed at Qualcomm except the number of employees. The company used to have enough money that it could afford to make huge business mistakes (MediaFlo, Mirasol) and to allow upper management to extend high-paying jobs to their unqualified buddies. Now that the market has matured, the company can no longer absorb these costs. Unfortunately, the culture hasn't changed, and neither have behaviors. Qualcomm is driving itself out of business.
