Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Why does our company continue to LIE about the total no. of employees affected?

It is clearly far more than 1314 people here in SD. The HR folks have been used to spinning things for so long, they can't even tell the truth when Wall St. has already been told it's much higher. If you count all the voluntary retirements, people leaving because they can't stand the toxic environment any more, PIPs, contract labor, temps, AND the people being REPLACED by overseas cheaper labor (the worst tactic of all), the number is much, much greater. Closer to the 3-4K number originally projected to Wall St. I hate how our slimy HR people try to have it both ways. You can't lay people off and keep them. JUST TELL THE F***ING TRUTH FOR ONCE!

I think they misrepresented numbers too. That is OK. JANA knows this and will demand more of them. If you are gonna lie say you laid off more than you did. That way you appease the street and not leave them hanging. Also note the stock did not pop on layoff notice.

Anonymous157099, you are a f***ing HR tool. Shut up and go lick some SVP butt. The fact that the company lied last fall about actual numbers, as well as this time, shows a consistent pattern of trying to keep the numbers "reasonable", as if the company is just letting a little air out of an overinflated tire, instead of puncturing it altogether. Stop trying to defend the indefensible.

Why do you think the numbers and statements are inconsistent?

Qualcomm announced that they planned to cut 15% of its workforce.

There is always attribution at companies, even Qualcomm. People leave for both personal and professional reasons. As with many short term rates, the short term rate is hard to measure. Also, unless employee is honest and is very introspective, being able to attribute it to this layoff event is impossible. Not replacing people that leave is a very humane way to get to the 15%. There is no reason to count them in the layoff numbers.

There are always retirements at companies, even Qualcomm. I retired from Qualcomm recently. People retire for both personal and professional reasons. My reasons for retirement from Qualcomm were mostly personal but were partially that Qualcomm is a different company after 20+ years (as one would expect). Not replacing people that retire is a very humane way to get to the 15%. There is no reason to count them in the layoff numbers.

There are always people that are terminated for poor performance at companies (people that do not improve while on a PIP), even QUALCOMM. Not replacing people that are terminated for poor performance is a very humane way to get to the 15%. There is no reason to count them in the layoff numbers.

Contractors have a contract Qualcomm for a period. When the contract expires, then they are no longer under contract to Qualcomm. It is true that they are competing in the job market at that point. However, Qualcomm did not lay them off. There is no reason to count them in the layoff numbers.

Qualcomm has offices outside of San Diego where layoffs also occurred.

Agree. I will only trust the numbers from calwarn when they update, and even then there's certainly hr spin. Supposedly 1000 people left before the layoff, they must have sensed trouble ;). I'm certain that initial 1000 were probably mostly top performers.
