Thread regarding Baker Hughes Inc. layoffs

I Have Another Job Offer, Should I Leave Baker?

I want honest opinions. I got an offer paying 10k more than what I get now from a company in another industry, but I don't want to jump ship and lose my bonus and 401k. I also actually really like Baker as well as my current job and the people I work with.

The only thing that bothers me is that If I don't take it that I might get axed by HAL and will end up an uber driver with an engineering degree.

I was just laying down my new audio book,... you know, no writing, just spoken words,... the old fashioned way, and I can already tell that I don't like you, and I'm probably not gonna like you, no matter how many pull ups or pushups you do.

Just a quick update...I ended up passing on the position.

I enjoy what I do now, and if I do get layed off I know I can still manage. Thanks to everyone for the input, and best of luck to all!

764,... and your post reeks of arrogance. And poor grammar. In deference to the attention deficit disorder you seem to be afflicted with, I'll make this post brief. STFU.

My post below should end after the "animals" sentence. By the way, Billy, you need to do more due diligence and study the details of the TOTAL compensation package (in MyRewards) as most people here are ignorant about the details. Know the difference between "company base" and "company matching" contributions to your thrift account. Know what is a high-deductible insurance policy. Know how a "Health Savings Account" (HSA) can saves you tax and pays you more interest than a bank. Know the expense ratios of your 401k investment choices . . . Knowledge will give your power and set you free . . . Best wishes!

Most people in this forum are too emotional to be of council. Based on decades of scars and experience, I would recommend that you stay put, at least until after getting the ICP.

Consider "Just the Facts":

  1. Young engineers have a favorable "pay to value" ratio can find a job most anywhere in the US, unlike hired hands. Just don't be the bottom 20% in your peer group.

  2. Let's say you are age 25, a grade 11 or 12, worked in BHI for 1.5 years, and with an annual salary of $80,000 and 10% ICP. You are guaranteed an $8000 bonus shortly after the merger in 2 to 4 months.

  3. BHI subsidizes your insurance and that is worth perhaps $1000 a year.

  4. Employee Stock Purchase Plan gives you a 1.5% boost in pay.

  5. Pension and 401k contributes 9% at your age and will vest after 3 years of service.

Remember, one zoo is no better or worse than another, just the animals differ.

a 10% ICP ooking at the cannot help you. But the

Judging by your cloying and vainglorious "question", I will hazard the following,... the poor taste exemplified by asking such a question against the backdrop of an industry-wide downturn, on a forum whose audience is (which should be evident even to the clueless) intended for those who have, are, or may be losing their jobs, indicates either your vomit inducing callousness, or your purely egocentric approach to Life. That you attempt to further garnish YOUR good fortune with promise of a raise, then invite others (most likely, none of whom HAVE no such "offer" and who are facing a much dimmer future than YOU) into your fantasy world of "tough decisions" (stay, get a bonus, keep 401k, risk layoff,... or bolt, gain fame and riches, risk a new job?) suggests you may be young and full of yourself (although I've seen plenty of older hands with these same tendencies, too). Yours is not a very difficult decision. But, there IS a problem, regardless of which path you choose. EITHER choice requires a degree of courage. Either choice involves facing an unknown and uncertain future. I'd say, again, just judging by your question and accepting that what you say is true (giving you the benefit of doubt), that you're ANYTHING but a person of courage. I base that assessment upon the obvious pride you take in your "engineering degree", your current situation (YOU will get a BONUS and YOU have a 401k!), and the fact that YOU are DESIRED (unlike every other poor sap on this site) by another company,... to listen to YOU, YOUR future is secure, full of reward, and the only dilemma YOU face is that of choosing which wonderful road to take. Have I got that about right? So,... and I continue to accept that what you say is true, that you DO have it so good, while others in this sea of misery are being asked to assist YOU in this monumental decision,... I say to you,... regardless of your ultimate choice, you will remain, the same pathetic, frightened little weasel you already are,... that, even if you were to receive a $100,000 increase in salary, AND a bonus of equal amount (these are ridiculous extremes, I realize, I just want you to realize,... even THOSE amounts are quite insignificant,... think of what YOU are in a quandary over,... A TENTH OF THOSE AMOUNTS), you will never be happy, because you will always fear losing it. You require the admiration of others in order to feel worthy of yourself, and, that is the sign of a loser. So,... take your pick, dickhead. Go. Stay. It makes no difference. Your insecurity and thin veneer of confidence is apparent to all,... you know it, as well. My only regret? That I can't identify you to watch you fall into a pit of despair and fear that others must endure, to watch YOU crumble, lose everything, and die. Otherwise,... have a nice day!

Why the rude comments to Billy? Sometimes it's funny to read comments when y'all BS, but he asked a genuine question that most of us may deal with pretty soon. I'm actively job-hunting for a Supply chain position outside BHI so your question is helpful. Thanks for the advice eightball!! Makes sense ... (Employed less than a year so i'm getting no severance pay should I be let go).

Bonuses will still be paid out regardless of the financial reports. They're prorated according to various metrics, so while they will be paid the acutual dollar amount will be small.

Baker became like large sinking ship. It takes time but at the end it will sink. Try to jump & join another stable company. Now you can get your dues but later no body knows what new rules & situation will take place.

If you cant make such a simple decision as this then I reckon you should stay at BHI and try for a management post? Indecisions like this are rare to find outside of the managerial circle guessing you either have some management experience if not then you're just plain old dumb

If you look at the revenue reports for 2014 (Q3 is Oct 21) I can't see anyone getting any bonus for 2014. As for the 401k, you won't lose it, you can transfer it to a new company or transfer it to a standard IRA (easy to open if you don't currently have one). If you are concerned about possible headcount reductions your length of time with BHI will determine layoff package which is usually one week per year of service ..and remember it's taxed! Will the additional 10k from another employer exceed a potential layoff package? The oil industry will be in the doldrums until at least 2017. Also remember that the headcount reductions to date are only associated with oil price and activity. Headcount reductions as a result of the takeover haven't even started yet...
