Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What Do You Do and Where Do You Go After Being Let Go?

Thousands of people in the oil industry in Houston have had their lives put into turmoil. The stress and uncertainty about the future must be incredible. The house, the car, the wife/husband, the children, putting food on the table. You were a good and valuable employee (many of you) and now you are not worth keeping. Often through no fault of your own and giving your best at whatever job assignment you had. The industry is down and hiring is almost nonexistent. Human energy? Ha. The important thing is to keep paying the dividend at all costs. It might be good for all of you sitting at home and scouring the job market to arrange a get together to network and just talk. The holidays are coming up soon and we must all try to be as positive as possible. Not only for ourselves, but for those who depend on us and love us.

If your priorities are in the order listed OP (house, car, spouse kids...) it may be rough ride.

Time to look into options. The Houston EEOC office is just a block away from 1500 Louisiana St. in the Total tower. Phone: 1-800-669-4000.

Or,... you might consider moving to Afghanistan and share-cropping a poppy farm. Otherwise,... these are the tradeoffs of living in a modern, 21st Century industrialized economy. Your choice.

Well, it is much less difficult for younger people. Anyone in their fifties or older are in for a tough search with positive results. Age discrimination is real, but not spoken of. It is good to hear people are finding work elsewhere, hopefully much more rewarding.

I have several younger co-workers who decided to put their hands up, and leave. They found jobs within days of looking. I have another co-worker who went through the process, got a job, and gave his notice shortly thereafter, he got a new job outside of Chevron. I have another co-worker, who has saved Chevron over 17 million over the past 5 years, she is fed up and is leaving for another job. Chevron has put together a management team of people who can't or have never done the job they are trying to manage. I am looking forward to starting my new job after Thanksgiving.

I suggest developing strong profiles / resumes on LinkedIn and Oilpro. Also see websites like Drilling Ahead and Rigzone. I am still working at CVX but even so I keep my experience updated on my resume. There are jobs out there, the oilfiled is not shutting down despite the layoffs and overwhelming pessimism of most. You can find work if you commit to that aim.

The employees with IT skills are finding jobs quickly. Knowing some of the people the let go and the ones they kept, I can see why they are finding jobs. Tell everyone you know you are out of work, it is amazing how many leads come from your network.

Did you know that Texas taxpayers pay millions to CVX to import employees from California? It comes to $14,000 per Cal employee. Texas unemployment is skyrocketing. Tell your congressman.

Excellent points. I fear that a few may even commit suicide. But who will know?
