Seems like each year during the boom Chevron kept adding more and more headcount. Rather than adding some work to employees, they hire folks to do 2-3 hours worth of work a day (if that). I mean how many of you truly work more than 4 hours a day?

People can't afford to retire anymore, so they don't.
Makes sense that everyone in Houston doesn't feel like they do work. That's because all the actual work happens in operations. 10 hr days are the norm.
hire the masses and fire their asses ! WPA motto
Young and restless, Boomers can't collect social security until 66 and 67.
HR miscalculated; the boomers ain't going near as fast as HR and Management thought they would. Some actually enjoy their jobs and don't plan on going anywhere unless incentified to do so. A decent rise in interest rates will push some out as will a program like Shell has done; ie a bronze parachute.
The boomers aren't freaking retiring - I have no idea why some of these people stick around, blocking the way for the up and comers while doing nothing themselves. Downstream didn't go crazy hiring at least. Upstream needs to pay the piper
Part of the hiring was to replace the anticipated retirements of the Baby Boomers.
Hiring people makes it look like the business is growing.
umm, I work 8 hours a day, sometimes longer, with an hour lunch break. granted, several hours are pointless meetings.. but when i'm not in the meeting, i'm doing work to do those action items from said meetings.
