Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Short tips on job search (what I have experienced over the past 1 month)

  1. Don't trust the news. Some companies may claim that they are hiring or willing to train since the technologies of field of knowledge is different between companies, it is not true. They just want to appear gracious and glamorous on the news. It's just corporate propaganda. I have spoken to people who are within the companies. Not only that the claims of willingness untrue, many of the companies have, in fact, freeze hiring, hence, you are really only wasting your precious time, especially when you have H1-B expiry counting down on you.

  2. Don't trust onsite interviews. Many companies are not interviewing you because they are hiring, they are interviewing for various agendas such as because they have to show evidence to the regulatory as part of the criteria to demonstrate high labor demand for corporate growth in order to apply green cards for their H1-B employees. Other reasons may be to create audit logs to lure investors, etc.

  3. Don't be myopic and racist. We all need each other for effective help. Many H1-B employees (of various companies) who are now making a big population (which we will not contend here of their skills or quality) are very willing to help from my own experience. Not only will they tell you what the companies are looking for, but understanding the nature of the company culture and businesses. They can guide you on the kind of candidates they are looking for. Some criteria won't be on the job descriptions posted. They can and will help you. I have first hand experienced it myself. If you want to remain hostile and racist, I assure you there is nothing to gain, and it will only hurt you.

  4. Don't blame the wrong people. Work on the progress, if your complaints can make a difference, you can consider the rant. No one owes anyone a job, understand the system which we lived it. Everyone is a commodity. It's the system that is in question. If you are not happy with the system, there is nothing to blame on the people who are subjected to the system. You are attacking the wrong people. Ask instead who set and who accepted the system. Be responsible for the change you want to see. If you blame people for being greedy and callous, do a reality check if we are one of them. Do we ourselves care for people around us? Do we isolate ourselves. I notice people do curse the Indians for being mono-cultural, it may be true, but look at ourselves. Are we contaminated with white supremacy? Do we ourselves subject ourselves to parochialism and ignorance? Fundamentally, is our world view inhibiting us from possibilities? Is our mindset / mentality backward? If you always allow limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, the same mindset will spread into your work and into your life.

  5. While we do our job hunt, keep your mind and body healthy, it does not help to bring yourself down during times like these. You might even find the answers in helping other people, other than yourself. Broadening your scope and your solution view will also expand accordingly. Seek help, don't work alone. Improve on a daily basis. All these will come to pass.

  6. This is not the worst that can happen, life is filled with troubles. I have had friends losing their lives over the past months. Understand that the problem looks bigger when you stare at it long enough, and tunnel vision can make you lose the bigger picture. While going through rough rides like this, don't lose traction of the vital values in life. Understand why you have a job in the first place, you have certain values in life, don't lose them nor serve the other way round. It is frustrating to have worries like that, you are not alone, and bear in mind, somethings are not for sale. We question the economy later, we question why we are serving the system rather than to have to system serve us, but for now, we question why we are so willing to lose ourselves to the system so readily. Don't lose focus on the important things in life. The job is merely a subset, and be ready to expand your horizon. Embrace change and the unfamiliar. Make allies not enemies. Be ready for the paradigm shift.

I am surprised to find so many strong responses when I revisit the page today.

@Anonymous188732, I did find a job within 30 days. btw, I am not preaching. Words don't mean much. If this information is useless, just leave it. Don't waste your time. Does cursing change a thing? Does it help?

Even if I got the results, it could be fortuitous. I am not exceptionally talented. In fact, I have to compensate the lack by working harder. I slept 3 or 4 hours a day in order to get things running. I have very dedicated friends though, hence, I never felt alone in the situation. Things went really well, though I got lesser sleep due to the tight time line amidst the handover process. The writings are based on my own subjective experiences, and some came from my friends.

As some comments stated, I may be wasting my time - I am just trying. Curse me or love me - you don't know me, and you really don't have, what is important is - you. How to get YOU ahead NOW and back to peaceful days - This is all that matters. I just want to put forward what I have seen over the past 30 days and from what people have done for me. I can understand the frustrations. I had been there. I know people just want to vent anger. That is understandable. My job hunt may be over, but I am still running around for friends who are affected. I won't be visiting this page, hence, this would be my only and last reply.

Better days ahead, my fellow Qualcomm colleagues.

OP, you sound like the preaching Deepak Chopra. After 1 month of searching did you find a better job? If not, how does anyone know the tips are valid or worth the time?

@188111, you are not reading properly. Just as @Anonymous187614 had said, you are not hearing what OP is saying. It is clear she or he said

"It's the system that is in question. If you are not happy with the system, there is nothing to blame on the people who are subjected to the system. You are attacking the wrong people. Ask instead who set and who accepted the system. Be responsible for the change you want to see. If you blame people for being greedy and callous, do a reality check if we are one of them. "

Did you do your own reality check lately? I have to give it to George Carlin and this guy (OP) who wrote the post. They made their point - "The public sucks", and you just proved it. Thanks for vote.

how is an engineer different than a barrel of oil? they have a spot price, and quality rating, and limited lifespan to produce energy/code.

@ '708: A lot of companies advertise every week. Including QCOM. With the exception of a couple of Sundays back when they first gave notice of the layoff, there have usually been multiple ads for various engineering positions in the Sunday U-T, and "Murky News." Many of those ads claim multiple openings. Do you think they will hire any RIF'ed people for those positions? You only have a 50% chance of being right, so I'll make it easy: NO! It's how they justify hiring H1-Bs--or in this case, leased employees. At least SeeScan is smart enough to realize that most engineers don't buy newspapers. From what I understand, it's a legit company, but they make products with specialized applications. While they require some deep technical expertise, after a certain point, there really is no more technical challenge. Imagine yourself doing a 10 or 20 year stint mmaking something like the next FitBit or other IoT thing. At some point, it gets old and people move on. On the plus side, it could give someone with his own original ideas an idea of what is involved in running a small-mid-sized tech start-up.

Don't devalue people by saying they are a commodity. Oil is a commodity, so is wool, people have families, countries, and lives.

You are part of a sickness which calls people commodities. You psycho babble is not very well thought out. Go back to school and study the great philosophers and then get back to us

A company called See Scan has been posting on craigslist for 4-5 years now. I noticed them when I still had a job, then when my startup went toes up I saw them again. Never sent a resume, but if they've been advertising every other week for 4 years then something is up with them.

OP: Let me summarize for you. I do not think it is as easy as a statement from what @Anonymous187391 had said. Obviously, people are rejecting and not hearing what you wrote, so let me do you the favour.

  1. Don't trust the news, it is usually the corporate propaganda.

  2. Interviews can be fake, so do not be disappointed.

  3. Don't be myopic and racist. Do not remain mono-culture, it will only hurt you. ("Make allies not enemies. Be ready for the paradigm shift." - I like this line from pt 6, so I am putting them in pt. 3)

4 (combined with point 5 and 6). Don't blame the wrong people. Understand the situation. Do not limit yourself and don't miss the good things in life. Keep your mind and body healthy,

OP: People are lazy to read, and especially, in challenging times like these, so please be understanding to their rants. I am pretty short-fused myself lately. I appreciate your efforts and I think there are pitfalls we can avoid from what you had said. Thank you for making the time, however, unappreciated by some.

I agree with @Anonymous187411. There are not enough good people to go around. Look at the comments of the whiners against the good will of OP. These people cannot be helped and they already decided their own fate.

@Anonymous187474, @Anonymous187477, @Anonymous187505,

The writer sounds like the kind of person who may be the one who is dumb enough to help us when the company is abandoning people like us.

LOL ...

OP is definitely the type of person I try to avoid in the hallways at work. Could you imagine asking "how's it gong". Or worse what if he is a direct report and you need an update. it would be much easier to do the work yourself then listen to him babble for 45min.

187396: I may agree with you that most people don’t appreciate OP’s help, but some people too appreciate such kindness and empathy. Being kind is not being weak, and in fact, it is the opposite. Being able to go against popular trends shows courage and real character.

Shocked to see how many losers on this page attacking the person who is trying to help.

Maybe the layoff is not too wrong either from the way people are responding to this post. Qualcomm trashing out the trash, though they might have got a few wrong guys sometimes.

@Anonymous187341, read properly. @Anonymous187334 was clear that she or he received help from friends.

I assume @Anonymous187334 got a job now and is reaching out to help. I don't like the words she or he is using - cold and hard, though true. However, in comparison, to @Anonymous187341, we don't need a**holes like you. If you can be constructive like @Anonymous187334, that can help better.
