The "Axe Man" is a fitting nickname. Anonymous190838 is correct - Latin America marketing was sold, but also Africa and mostl recently Australia (i.e. Caltex) downstream. My understanding is that these were very profitable businesses. However, when you "gold plate" them with the (dis)functionalization operating model, San Ramon processes, and apply the corporate criteria of alignment with upstream, large market size, dominant market share, stable political landscape, growth potential, etc. then you get the decision to sell everything. Luckily for CVX that we did not go the Conoco and Marathon route and totally spin-off downstream, otherwise we'd be screwed today.

that's a lot of Bullsh*t Mike took Latin America Marketing (Texaco) that was making a fortune, changed it (cauterized the functions in SR) made it a real big looser then sold it. he does not create anything no vision he will do the same to everything. retire him before he sells the company to china.

In my opinion it's a grooming step for Pierre before becoming the next CEO. Would not be surprised if Mike is thinking about retiring within the next two years.

Through Mike's leadership, downstream turned around from losing money to earning stable income for the company. I still remembered the ROM in 2010 that cut 40% of the employees. The transition happened right before thanksgiving. The atmosphere was odd and unpleasant. I took over couple folks' positions. It was achieved via prioritization and process simplification (lean sigma). People in this forum complained that the company kept the young and cut the old. That's not true. Before I moved to upstream last year, my previous downstream operation hired a BA who was over 60. She was good in communication and had good work ethics. Not all but many senior employees in this company are so resistance to change. They enjoyed and prioritized socialization and pushed back on new processes and tools. They insisted that the new stuff were not adding values and things should be executed through experience.
I don't care if I will get cut in the upcoming rom. I understand that it is a business and politics but I also understand my value and skillsets. If I get cut, I will carry the valuable experience from chevron and join a different technical industry. Stay positive and keep up with the spirit. Chevron upstream will come back stronger than b4.
