umm.. i dont see anything wrong with the english? RL gave 1MM dollars away, OP is asking how many jobs could have been saved had he invested that money elsewhere... say his EMPLOYEES?

The company uses funny math. One round of layoffs was not noted as a layoff as the workforce numbers remained the same. Equal numbers of new hires / new fires and so no change in the workforce numbers. Quite a few of the new hires were hired only to be fired in the near future. The layoff of new hires was in fact part of the big picture. Same concept as a supervisor hiring an employee to be used as a pawn in forced rankings.
