anyone landed a job after getting let go by conoco? I can't seem to even get an interview...

Do not underestimate the efforts associated with the job search. Create multiple plans for multiple lengths of unemployment. Use the $2000 education credit to improve the resume. I have been quite successful with alternating between job search, education, home improvements and travels. In the end the job search gets the resume viewed and the education gets the resume noticed and the home improvement gets me money enough to move to a new job in a new location. The travel is both work and play. No harm in adding a few days of play to the work we call an interview. Both private sector and public sector are more often than not slow. Not out of the ordinary for a call for an interview to be associated with an application completed 2-4 months prior.

192206 is right on. I noticed right away that all the true technical roles went to the favorite employees and they got them time after time. I had pushed hard to move into a technical role so I have something to put on my resume but they wanted to keep me in a role where I just babysat other employees and pushed some papers around. It didn't make sense withe my strong technical background. I decided to leave the summer in 2014 but by the time I started looking prices started falling in the fall and the opportunity for a solid position at a good company disappeared. I have to wait now! Haha

Timing is key for hiring (not luck). As one poster noted experience and education are important factors but not everyone has a high level of experience or a high level of education. Individuals in a career track at ConocoPhillips will have much better content on the resumes. I seem to remember endless meetings with the TMT (talent management teams) and the hundreds of individuals in the audience not management by the TMT and so not in a career track and not provided the opportunities of the individuals managed by the TMT. Endless dead end roles at ConocoPhillips unfortunately and the dead end roles are not easily leveraged into other roles at other companies. I for one was much disappointed with the opportunities (or lack of) after starting at ConocoPhillips. The career goals and objectives conversation at the interview was public relations at best. I worked for over four years to move into a career advancing role without success due to the parade of on campus recruits moving into the roles. Odd the company paid well but did not provide opportunities for employees to add value sufficient to justify the pay.

Weird, my layoff was the exact opposite. I said I worked for ConocoPhillips and seemed like companies were eager to place me somewhere because of experience there. Granted I also have a masters degree in accounting and finance to support. I landed a job 5 weeks after (barely got my unemployment started) and secured a level up position, more money and better insurance. I know I was lucky but I sure figured luck was a factor of experience and education.

A few have noted walking across the street and landing a job within days or weeks; but as a rule expect 2-6 months (or longer) to land a permanent full time job. Upstream companies are bad prospects. Locations heavy in upstream companies are bad prospects. Downstream companies are good prospects. Locations heavy in downstream companies are good prospects. Efforts to change industries and/or change locations are challenging for the employee as the employers tend to hire individuals with current experience in the industry living in the immediate location.
