Goog doesn't see the forest from the trees. The problem is not HW, which is more or less the same. The biggest problem is Android which is cr@p. Every time you upgrade the phone OS the result is a less usable and buggy device. The ecosystem is just not stable enough to be a solid platform. Thus worries me more than HW. If you put it toghether, you have HW that is not as goid as Appl, SW that is far less goid, devuces that are not as slick. How can you win?

Google is a printing money machine; Q will be split up and bought out: this is the best scenario that can happen to it.

Anonymous195349, ahem, but Google kicks QC's ass. G is less than 1/2 as old as QC has grown much larger, profitable, better work environment, superior technology, the list goes on. I don't see one area in which QC is better than G, so your F Google answer makes no sense. But then again, not much coming out of Q makes any sense these days. Good luck in your poverty.

This Is Qualcomm's Fault

Google's current demands come because Qualcomm epically screwed up this year.

In the Western world, and especially in the U.S., Qualcomm has a near-monopoly on Android CPUs and modems. Intel and Samsung nibble around the edges, but Qualcomm's strength has always been its ability to integrate CPUs, GPUs, and 3G and 4G modems in ways that fit into small packages and make wireless carriers very comfortable. I've heard from several phone manufacturers that even if they use other parts elsewhere, they always turn to Qualcomm in the U.S. because Qualcomm chips are much easier to get through FCC and carrier approval processes.

But Qualcomm's lineup this year has been widely considered disappointing. The company rose to smartphone prominence by doing its own proprietary riffs off the standard ARM processor designs that many companies use. But it was caught off guard last year by Apple's switch to 64-bit, and rushed out a series of flagship 64-bit chips using more generic ARM designs. First, the Snapdragon 810 was criticized for overheating problems. The Snapdragon 808 doesn't overheat, but it's crushed by current Samsung and Apple chipsets on performance. And downmarket Snapdragon chips, like the 615 and 410, don't have the GPU power Google needs for a push into virtual reality.

This is a big part of why Qualcomm has been calling journalists practically every two weeks about next year's Snapdragon 820 processor. The 820 could be what we wanted and expected from the 810, with optimized custom cores that don't overheat and an industry-leading GPU. We don't know. Nobody's tested it yet.

Well, if Ford, Mozilla, NBC, MS and Jesus hadn't dropped the ball, Googled wouldn't have need it to take 'em to school, yo.

Google is building self driving cars and it's all Ford's fault. Google built Chrome and it's all Firefox's fault. Google bought youtube and it's all NBC's fault. Google made maps and it's all mapquest's fault. Google wants to cure death and it's all Jesus' fault.
