Good news for asteroid miners as the Senate passes Bill confirming property rights for asteroid miners

Soon global warming activists/politicians will limit drilling on earth. The industry must start drilling in space. The Senate just passed a bill called H.R.2262 — SPACE Act of 2015, which is designed to facilitate commercial space. The most interesting and potentially far-reaching provision concerned property rights for companies proposing to mine asteroids for their resources. In essence, the bill confirms that private companies own what they mine.

Great point. It's always the same when you're dealing with asteriod field trash. To paraphrase the movie Rhinestone, those guys are so horny the crack of dawn ain't safe. Kudos on retiring at 36 but you do realize that $6 mil is not a lot of money anymore right?

Who would be responsible if they brought back space crabs or worse the space clap? It could cause a epidemic of biblical proportions.

The US will get to the asteroid first. Any US private company that drills on the asteroid can bring back their loot to US and they shall own that mineral right. This bill just guarantee that the US government will let the companies own what they mine. Now if Somali or Malawi want to build their space program then go ahead. If Chinese companies want to explore and mine the asteroid then go ahead; they can't even copy successfully the shale drilling boom.

That is just a little shortsighted. I would recommend pangalactic space law and treaties. You forgot about the space aliens. They may take an entirely different view. Just saying.

What if another country, say China, does not agree with the US law? What if they start an asteroid reclamation program like South China Ceres so they can claim it as their own? What if Russia invades the asteroid and claims imminent domain after a private company has set up a working mine? What about Somali space pirates? This law seems about as useless as anything else the senate does. This should be under the UN. At lease the private company can get a UN resolution against the offender that won't be followed and could express rightful indignation to the press. Maybe this should fall under international maritime law which is basically "finders keepers" unless the asteroid minerals had some historical significance to a particular country. For example, a Scot discovers the asteroid so all minerals recovered, regardless of who got it, could be claimed by Great Britain or Scotland depending on whether Scotland is still part of GB at the time. Regardless, lawyers specializing in international space law are going to clean up. I'm enrolling in law school next term.
