Long story short, I was layed off less than a year after starting straight out of school, and I am completely broke and 20k in credit card debt. I live with my parents who drove me to work every day. I made over 100k/year working for Conoco. My monthly overhead is as follows: Netflix - $10. I don't understand where all my money went! I go out to eat every day and go to the clubs every night, but I don't count that in my budget so it probably doesn't matter. How am I gonna pay my bills??? Also my parents said they would pay the credit card off for me, so I'm good there.

The loss of tax revenue in BVO will devastate the local police force and fire department. Expect speed traps everywhere to make try and up the deficit and longer callout times for police or fire services. RIF of the police will cause all those octogenarians and septuagenarians to get scared and move out This will further drop resale value in Colonial Estates. At least it will make driving around town safer. No way about it, life in BVO, as we have come to know it, is over. The industry that will fill the vacuum is meth labs. Too bad they didn't market Kalioka water any better. SLB is just keeping a skeleton staff at the Reda plant so they don't have to file with the EPA and tell them what is really underneath it. Walmart may have to downgrade from Supercenter status. Maybe someone can dig up an old treaty somewhere so they can build a huge casino on Frank Philips Blvd. Meth dealers gotta spend their money somewhere...
P66 will not be the savior of Bartlesville, in spite of statements otherwise. The new P66 offices in Houston accommodate employees far in excess of the current employees in Houston.

The staff at the universities tell the prospective candidates for roles at ConocoPhillips to note "Bartlesville" as the desired location. The staff at the universities tell the prospective candidates a move to Houston (or elsewhere) will occur after six months in the roles. All very underhanded.
Ask folks in Houston how long their commute is each week! Most have over an hour commute compared to my hour from Tulsa to Bartlesville. I fear for Bartlesville and the end result when this is said and done.
People do not go to work for ConocoPhillips as a first choice of employment. The location is deterrent enough for prospective employees. But ConocoPhillips does a good job with the spin and the salary is high. The new hires noted a salary $5000 higher than the competition and a $10,000 sign on bonus. With the cost of living in Bartlesville the new hire is in a quandary. Even so quite a few new hires have learned to just say no and go elsewhere, be it lower salary and higher cost of living.
15 hours/week for a 45 mile commute in Oklahoma is a bit of a stretch, but the guy who said that has a point. If you have to live in Tulsa, you'd probably be better off financially if you worked in Tulsa. And it would definitely be less time consuming.
Some people are dense. Bartlesville has two employers. P66 is ok. COP is not ok. COP is months from M/A or bankruptcy. No COP employee (or the company, for that matter) will remain in Bartlesville in 12-24 month. Not a good environment to own property. The on campus recruits are caught up in a web of lies via the recruiters both on the university level and the corporate level.
Still does not justify a 45 mile commute. In addition to fuel cost, you have additional vehicle maintenance costs, faster vehicle depreciation, and whatever 15 hours/week of your time is worth. 10 years of that will cost you more than anyone will lose on their home in Bartlesville unless they live in a mansion. If you're that paranoid about real estate in Bartlesville, why work at COP? Even if the pay is higher than Tulsa companies, it won't be after you factor in commuting costs. And recent grads all have the option of renting.
Homes have a resale value in Tulsa, unlike Bartlesville.
Anonymous199310, consider if you will, (Que Twilight Zone tune) a town, not just any town but a nice town with a company that has been its major employer (think sum of all payrolls) for decades. Then, suddenly there is a significant reduction in the sum of the payrolls in said town. Hmmmm; relatively high pay jobs gone. Ripple effect into the community from those lost payrolls, gone. A reduction in the total local economy, including real estate demand? Now consider someone owning a home elsewhere, perhaps in a town with more population ans diversity of employment (at scale) like maybe... oh, I don't know, maybe... TULSA?
It's not too difficult to imagine now, is it?
199279, how in the hell does living in Tulsa help you financially? Excessive commuting by car is one of the dumbest financial decisions you can make unless it's really necessary, which in the case of Bartlesville it's definitely not.

Not quite as simple as described. The noted recent graduate is burdened with $25,000 - $75,000 of student loans, student loans based on the fairy tale presented by the university and the oil and gas donors to the university. No mention of the new car or new house or new family; for ConocoPhillis is a family company and encourages the family environment (Bartlesville). Good luck to the new hires and the new home purchased in Bartlesville. The senior staff learned long ago to live in Tulsa or the suburbs of Tulsa and lie about living in Bartlesville.
At least his priorities are right. Don't give up Netflix. That's what my daughter tells me anyway. What is Netflix?
