Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Life sucks and then you die. Unless it doesn't. Message to the new kids on the block (and anyone NEW in the oil business)

A promise of life, bliss and oppurnity in the oil industry are smoke / mirror screens. You can look at it like a scam. When oil is good, you have the world in front of you, when it goes South, you're the bottom of the bucket. All companies were offeing incredible salaries to new folks, layoffs usually hit thee bottom of the bucket usually. All companies offered fantastic salairies and you were offered a job with COP. You accepted the job (I assume you your college professors expalined the cyclic price of oil) and now you're disccovering what the bottom the cycle is about

200672,

Funny, in light of the comments on this post, "Respect" came to mind immediately.

Maybe it's elusive for some folks.

The entire company communicates in riddles. The plot lines for Dr. Who are more in line with reality.

Some of us have lots of it, some of us have little

Some of us deserve more of it, some deserve none

Some of us give it, some never will

Some know it's value, some think it has none

Think about it.

No, it's not beer. (Beer runs a close second)

What a bunch of BS. 005 writes the company news letters and spouts eternal optimism. When you be around as long as I have, in the end I ask what was all that for? Later to sit around and talk about memories that nobody cares about. What a waste and most of us are tired of all the sugar coated lies that are constantly handed down. Being ground down for so many years is not my idea of fun.

I have worked in the industry for close to 40 years and this company for almost 35. This is a cyclical industry and yes, sometimes times get tough and you see good friends leave the company. It's also an industry that gives younger folks a lot of responsibility and an opportunity to learn and grow, travel the world and (unlike the original author) come out on the other end looking at a rewarding career with a lot of lifelong friends.

Life is what you make of it. Go in with your eyes open, but also go in willing to work hard and capture the opportunities placed in front of you. There are still opportunities for a career with this company and many other energy firms if you learn to follow the optimism and not the naysayers.

Why waste words on the ungrateful youth of today and their unrealistic expectations. My wealth allows me to enjoy the rest of my life while you youngsters will be at meaningless jobs toiling away from 9-5. Haha I think I'll have the last laugh at the youth of today. Good luck with all that debt... turkeys

Best thing for you to do is move back in with your parents and enjoy the easy life. Don't worry about meals and bills. They love you even though you are an ugly dumpling.

Too old and tired to move about. Nobody remembers him at work or even cares. And finally a big bank account while being laid into a coffin. Wow what a great life!... I bet he would give it all back to go back to being young.

Lol his wife probably died and they don't make shows like welcome back cotter anymore. Poor sap has nothing else to do but troll anonymously on online threads. What's with all this hate? What has young people ever done to you? No problem though, I would be sour too if I knew I busted my whole life working instead of enjoying life, got let go, and only 5-10 more years left to live. Enjoy death grandpa!

Hey Dude, your life must be empty to be retired or going into retirement and come to this site. Shouldn't you and your wisdom be moving on?

Ahhhh, the sanctimonious arrogance of youth. A year, maybe two years, down the road, when you still haven't yet found a job befitting your vaunted education, your unrealistic expectations,... when you've had to settle for something, shall we say,... a little more mundane,... I wonder if you will, THEN, have been relieved of your 'snark', your laughably gay 'swipes' at the wisdom of others, and your undeserved haughtiness. My guess? Probably not. With very rare exception, none of you are as smart as you have lead yourselves to believe, and I fully expect you'll be living at home, working in the fast-food industry,... if you're working at all. Just so you know,... I will be enjoying my retirement. Free from the Rat Race, financially secure, enjoying Life. See ya at the drive-thru!
