Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

the best job, the best people, the worst leadership

I'm happy to have spent the best years of my life at QC. Tomorrow is my last day in office like a few more unfortunate friends out there. I don't think I will have the opportunity again to work for so long and see so many changes in a single company in my career. Looking back, joining QC was the best decision of my life, helped me settle in life, helped me sharpen my techno-political skills. Not selling QC stock in its 70s is something I will regret in life. I still own every stock given to me, maybe somewhere my innerself says there is value in holding it whereas in reality I know there isn't. All QC needs is a group of leaders that are NOT engineers trying to solve complex tech problem to make the Professor happy. (The new leadership is good bunch of folks that can fit to be research students in any University). We need leaders that can dream, that can talk about vision and make people follow their vision.

Anyways, good luck everyone. I've found my next career move and wishing all that are impacted, or will be impacted the very best. Keep working hard, make QCOM touch 70, oops, 50 again.

All the best to you my friend. I know, if I say "all will be well" it sounds as Cliche. But, I sincerely believe good times will come to everyone. Just hang on. As one other fellow contributor told, financial planning is very important. We all make mistakes by holding stocks longer than they should be. I cannot give much information here, but diversification is always a good one. Talk to well qualified people on this. Donot choose financial planning based on our knowledge, let experts guide us. Again, all the best to you and keep that confidence. That's the only thing that takes us . (If you believe in god, just ask him to show the path .. he will)

Sorry you lost your job, same thing happened to me at a different company. Look on the bright side, It's probably to your benefit.

If you don't mind, can I give you a little finance advice that has served me well?

  1. Sell your ESPPs as soon as you get them. Lock in that 15% or 20% discount (I don't know what QCOM differential is). It takes discipline to do this and removes all the financial emotion out of it.

  2. Sell your RSUs on a regular basis. Set up a plan. Sell x shares every week or month on a certain day and just do it, no matter what the stock price is. Again, it takes discipline to do this and removes all the financial emotion out of it. I guess the only exception would be if you feel a big positive announcement is coming up but watch out for insider trading.

This is fundamental dollar cost averaging.

For me, it has paid off with a nice house in North County, two new cars and a big lump of cash in my retirement account. If I hadn't done this, I would be much worse off financially.

Best of luck.. I am right behind you, but did sell ALL qcom stock at 70+. I really think the ones involved in this layoff are the LUCKY ones. I don't plan on looking back.
