Going to an expensive college is usually a waste of money. Studies have show that a persons career path has little to do with the college they went to. It might help you get a foot in the door on your first job but beyond that, it's your performance on the job that will get you ahead.

there is more to life than engineering and computer science. how boring life would be if everyone was an engineer or a computer scientist. no artists, painters, sculptors, musicians, poets, writers, politicians, orators, historians, archaeologists, marine scientists, translators, missionaries, bible scholars, builders, architects, lawyers, philosophers. Be creative, be original, pursue perfection, follow your heart and not some propaganda.
Let your child choose freely on his/her passion and pursue it, and then support his/her efforts fully even if it'll cost you a cool $1M. STEM is not worth pursuing, unless your child has a true passion for that. Q is full of starry eyed STEM wannabes who have peanuts for brains nowadays, I'm afraid.
The white man complaining (not all white people, just the stupid ones complaining) is stupid for paying $250k for his kids college when his kids are dumb as a doorknob and decided to get a liberal arts degree in conversational linguistics...or "communications" from a shitty school like university of phoenix, and even more mad when the best job prospects his kids will have only requires the skill of saying "you want fries with that?"
No self respecting Asian parent would ever let their kids major in a bullshit, no future degree, unless the parent has a shitlpad of money such that the kid could love off of a trust fund.
Want proof? How many Asian women do you see as engineers or doctors and compare that to how many white girls who want to grow up and be like Kim kardashian?
