Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Job Interview Advice

I am a hardware engineer and have a job interview next week. I currently live in NY so I will have to relocate. I understand the company has been downsizing, is moral bad in the non software engineering groups ?? I am at the point in my career where I don't need to be promoted anytime soon, but I would like a steady pay check for at least 2 yrs. I like the idea of living in Austin, the weather, people, and lower cost of living, but do you think it is worth the gamble. I would hate to be laid off in 12mo. Ironically my caption code is "86" :) Thank you.

Over all DellEMC is a great place to work, focus on their emerging technologies if you want solid career growth. Yes all mergers cause consolidation in duplication of jobs, but if your an engineer, there are lots of great options.

During your interview, ask the manager, .."how much is the severance package?" Then come back and tell us their reaction. But anyway, seriously, if you really want to move to Austin, and they pay for relocation, take it. Then after a few months start looking.

Thanks for the advice, I am a single renter, so hopefully they can cover my moving costs. Does anyone know what the severance packages are like for someone with a short tenure ?

@joc is correct - use it as a springboard to come to Austin, once here, you will have a ton of options

Three words - "Run, Forest, RUN!" Dell is a dying company. On the hardware side, they are far more worried about the position of the logo and their "brand" than they are about the quality of the engineering. They build the same junk as every other PC company except they charge more. If you can get a relocation package to move to Austin, it might be worth taking, do a year, and get looking again.

Thanks I appreciate your candid reply. Where I live currently things are pretty bleak, so I will have to see how the interview goes and what type of package they offer assuming I get an offer.

It is very unstable at Dell right now - yet, you would likely be among last folks to go due to tenure/cost. If you have options look at alternatives, a good target employer would be one with ANY (modest to strong) but steady organic growth over at least 10 quarters. If no other options are available, take a stab at Dell - you will learn here and it will take at least 2 years before you become disgruntled. It is pretty ugly here, but not as ugly as scanning the messages below may lead younto believe...
