That's normal throughout corporate culture--not just ConocoPhillips. I have life-long friends that I am staying in touch with who also EOI with me, but most others who I am staying in contact with happen to be contractors still working there. It seems in a way for COP employees remaining, that those who left are a little tainted and something might rub off on them when the next layoff comes around. I could tell them, life is good on the outside and to not fear walking out the door ;)
Ya, I noticed this too. You really find out who your friends are: those that check up on you are your true friends, and not many did for me after the layoff, unless it was to pump me for information so they could gossip about me to their coworkers or to my old boss that got demoted to my old position. I got enough of that while working there and am glad it is quiet over there now that I am gone. RELIEF and good life is now what I experience, because the environment now is created by me, and only I am responsible for my happiness. COP no longer owns me. I might add that you also find out who your friends are outside of ConocoPhillips. If your Mother is alive and doesn't call you, you really know there is something wrong with you, however. :-)
My husband was laid off last year by cop, many of his cop colleagues helped, supported him throughout the most difficult time. It's his fortune that he found a job within a month "exact match". But there is one colleague, that they knew each out for over 10 years from their previous mutual employer, my husband referred him to COP, knowing he isn't doing well there. this guy quickly kissed his boss lady's butt, soon became team leader. Knowing my husband's layoff, he didn't respond with a single call or even email. I am wondering if all the time they spent drinking and chatting was just for his own interest getting into oil company. Now he is the "manager" of COP, best wishes to him continuously kiss-butt, as he wont be laid off , that what this company's management needed the most.
Sent goodbye emails to my colleagues - only 2 replied. So...yeah, "friend" is pushing it
Not my experience. A lot of my former colleagues keep in touch with me. Being laid off is a good, if unfortunate way to find out who your real friends are.

Generally if you are an older person and not management the younger folks see you as dead wood and need to be cut
I was laid off in october, GCBU drilling, still talk to good ex Co workers and the one supt (KW) who has his shit together.
The rest of GCBU was dead to me long before termination. It's just a good old boys club. No real work on part of MH or any COP field personnel.
It's probably more of a "dog eat dog" world now than in the past. They are your friend when you make them look good or carry their lunch ... But when you go ... You can't carry their lunch. It's apparently the world we are in now. Were they really your friend anyway?
I have actually seen with my own 2 eyes people treat others like they are a disease once they no longer work there.... I was raised better than that so I will never ever be that person!
I retired from ConocoPhillips several years ago and still have many friends within the company and many that have left as I did. We had to weather many of these cycles over the years together and it made us a more united family. It was a wonderful place to work and a wonderful experience that let me see and experience the world. You can be proactive or reactive to these situations and if you are reactive you are always behind and always a victim. We'll have a cold one and some laughs together when it's over. And a good reason to never move a to small town such as Bartlesville to work for a not so small company such as ConocoPhillips. Unless you are originally from Bartlesville you are dead to the coworkers after termination from the company.
