Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Switching teams

Is it possible to switch teams within Qualcomm right now? What would be the best way to go about doing it? Is there some kind of a hiring freeze in place right now? Can you be PIPed out as retaliation by your current team?

Like most large companies, it's easier to quit your current job and get hired into a new department than to transfer departments and keep your job. Not only that, but they have an ongoing series of layoff targets for each department. Think about it. If you are hired into a new department that new department has to increase its layoff targets by +1. What's the chance that the managers want to tell even ONE other person they are laid off? Zero. NIL.

@1nks: If you ask the HR they will tell you go ahead and apply without telling your manager and your manager won't be notified till you get an offer from the other department which is a lie and total BS. Once you apply on the IOS your manager will know about it and you will be blacklisted and PIPed out next review cycle. Very dishonest from whoever set those policies. Just be clear and state that a manager has to be notified first instead of hurting people.

I've seen it take almost a year for someone to be released to their new position.

I think it's all about empire-building and head-count games. Face it, if someone is allowed to move there is no guarantee that there will be a req available to replace them.

1arj: Considering that QCOM has been planning these RIFs since at least early 2014, when would you suggest we have started? Highsight is always 20/20. Even in 2013, internal transfers always involved politics and a$$-kissing. If your manager and director weren't willing to "smooth the way," you could forget it. And it invariably turned out badly if you didn't say anything and they found out about it third-hand.

These kinds of questions and concerns are very disturbing to me. It tells me that in QC there is no IOS policy that is enforced by HR. It is up to the individual managers to handle it the way they see fit. This can open the door to nepotism and various other situations which may be illegal in a work place, such as quid pro quo.

I would recommend HR to hold training sessions with managers and make it very clear what they are not allowed to do. Should also communicate to individuals that they should fear of any kind of retaliation if they chose to apply for IOS.

You had to request a transfer before the reduction was announced. This should be common sense unless you are one of the senseless.

IOS is a joke.... My team mate asked for IOS.. My director called the other director and asked him not to hire this guy... later that poor chap got GTFO package during layoff.. one of my friends got a transfer easily.. It is a big risk.. depends on the present team's culture...

Leave Q for company that does what you want to do (for more pay), come back after a couple of years (for more pay). But you probably will get to do that only once in your Q career, so make it count!

The only chance for a successful transfer is when a high ranking director at the destination department is willing to fight with your current department and HR on your behalf to bring you in. Otherwise you will be screwed in the process.

I agree that IOS is a joke. As soon as you turn your back to your current manager, he will hit you in the back with an axe and makes sure you are dead before you reach the other department (figuratively) They even call the other department and defame you so that they wouldn't take you. Then you have no choice to stay at your current department and get PIPed out on phony reasons a few month later since you have proven your disloyalty already.

Hello, HR, I know it's a little late, but is it possible to IOS?

The only way to do it with no risk is to work it from the other end first. The director of the other team has to know you personally, want you, and agree to fight HR to take you BEFORE you submit to IOS.

Otherwise you will be screwed.

Now, if the team you want to go to has a certain culture you may be able to pay under the table to get it done, especially if your caste is the right one.

I think that most of the IOS postings are just there to support H1B or green card applications. If your current team wants to keep you they can give you a low rating and you won't be eligible for IOS for the next 2 years anyway.
