Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

IF YOU COULD BE CEO of QUALCOMM FOR A DAY.... WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?

And I don't just mean fire SM--that's too easy. What would you do differently. And no, I'm not HR. I just wonder if anyone else looks around this place and sees a pile of wasted potential.

fva is a clear example of the mentality of Qualcomm HR towards engineers. It is no surprise that the company is going down.

fva (I'll PIP you on your next review), almost everything you touch in this life - your car, the street your car drives, your phone, your home, your fridge, dishwasher - was designed by an engineer, and they have nothing to do with the fact that he/she had an the HR department. HR is not actually a job, is a ...hmmm... specialization of somebody that failed to do what they originally wanted. Before you go to bed tonight, ask yourself what is the value you are creating on this planet.

in the 90's Qualcomm used to brag every engineer gets their own office. I guess times have changed. Thanks for the insightful and honest reply.

fva: Listen! That is the sound of the world's tiniest violin playing for your personal pity party! "You claim that most of the engineers have poor people skills and a huge and undeserved sense on entitlement." [Sic.]

I don't suppose it ever occurred to you that many engineers "have poor people skills" because they are borderline Asperger's or are otherwise on the autism spectrum. They may not excel at interpersonal communications--and in some situations may seem socially retarded; but AS people are often f*cking geniuses when it comes to coding or figuring out algorithms, or other aspects of mathematics. They tend to gravitate to these fields. Qualcomm pretty much screwed these people last year when you stuck them all in cubes. They don't work well in that environment. A lot of these AS people have never been diagnosed, because they are extremely high-functioning, and their condition did not interfere with their academics. But HR people who are properly trained should be able to recognize this and offer accommodations. Most of the large companies in Silicon Valley offer accommodations for AS. I notice you do not. Instead, you have permitted management to socially isolate these people and deprive them of chances for advancement within the company--which is unfortunate. Fortunately for you, since these people are extremely talented, they have left--or are leaving, sparing you the possible 8-figure lawsuit Qualcomm so richly deserves.

Of course there will always be people who are simply jerks. But if you have actually read this board, you would notice that most of them are motivated by money. If Qualcomm actually monetized manners, or deducted money from bonuses for acting like a jerk, the workplace culture would no doubt improve dramatically.

As for their "huge and undeserved sense [of] entitlement," perhaps you have misinterpreted the sense of frustration most engineers feel at being treated like interchangeable parts. We each bring unique skills to the company. And a lot of us are tired of the assumption that since "everyone uses Windows" we should be able to program a Windows interface. Windows sucks! It's inherently flawed! And we can't do anything about the flaws, because the code is proprietary. And in these times when everyone is worried about data security, it is possibly the worst interface option available.

I heard that my Chinese director and Chinese lead would absolutely DP sloppy wives of sm pj and rest exec super hard and super deep with their tiny chinese needles, and would take over q all together once it becomes chinese company. They said they would kneel down those sluts to clean their tiny chinese needles with their super oral skills. "God bless the people's united states of china" i heard them loudly hail in high spirits

HR is the hardest working group in the company that performs very well given the very difficult circumstances they are confronted with. Please do not bad mouth someone until you have stood and their shoes. Most of the engineers have poor people skills and a huge and undeserved sense on entitlement. If it were not for HR resolving all of the interpersonal and interdepartmental issues the company would be out of business by now. Stop whining and back to work !

In engineering, there are too many white people, they should hire more indians.

Hmm. For one make the managers, directors and VP's and abve more accountable for performance and make sure there is a lot more transparency as to what the goals and strategies are for the lower level folks so they can understand what their performance is being measured against and the end goals. There doesn't seem to be a lot of transparency on overall goals and strategies. Just my opinion of course

HR's policy in resolving employee-manager conflicts is currently this:

If employee is at fault, get rid of employee.

If manager is at fault, get rid of employee and manager.

They get rid of the employee in either case because they don't want to make any admission of guilt to employee and expose Qualcomm to potential lawsuits. The effect of this is that employees refrain from approaching HR for help and you end up with the current rotten culture that Qualcomm has.

Among other things, I would replace the semi-literate puppets in HR and the Employee Relations department with ones who can think independently and have the courage and will to maintain a healthy and professional work culture in Qualcomm.

Form a parallel org with key architects and business people that should start working on cutting edge products and processes. Slowly this should replace the existing mess.
