Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What Wil You Do When You Are Let Go?

To those in Houston - what are your plans when you are unemployed next week? This is a serious question since this industry may not recover for 2,3 or more years. For myself, I really don't have an answer.

Everyone, this week, before your badge is taken and you no longer have access to the company server, make sure to download at least 3 years of payroll data from the Benefits Connection website. You will have access to the Benefits Connection site from home, but not the payroll statements. You could be asked to supply up to 36 months of payroll statement information in the future, by Social Security, your State's Unemployment Office, a future employer, etc. Don't regret missing the opportunity to have saved PDF copies from the Chevron HR site while you had the chance. Take a thumb drive to work and make backups of everything you might need. Take it home and leave it there. Who knows if security may confiscate thumb drives before you are escorted out if the building on your last day at Chevron. It didn't happen to me last year, but who knows if protocol has changed.

I knew there had to be a few closet stoners at CVX. Already have a nice stash of Kind bud ready and waiting for the news. Either way the bong is going to see some action this weekend. Much better than drinking yourself blind.

I'm going to start a small niche import/export business in Houston. I have enough money to start alone with help from my wife.

Get your mind occupied in productive things, hopefully in a new job that pays the same or more like the one I started soon after cashing out every cent these bastards owed me. As for your former colleagues that did not show empathy when you left and that often visit your LinkedIn page to see "how you are doing", the logo of your new employer will slap them in their face...

I'm planning to get really angry and drunk for several days in a row and rant to whoever will listen about how I will get my revenge. Then go into a severe depression lasting several weeks or months and involving lots more alcohol. Throughout this entire time, I plan to have lots of arguments with my wife and yell at my kids for whatever stupid thing comes up. All of this culminating in me taking the first crappy job offer that comes my way and complaining constantly about how I was treated for at least the next ten years.

Find a job where women dress like adults and not 10 year old girls.

Well at least I can now be a real, individual human being and not have to sell my existence to the alter of political correctness, LGBT celebration, multiculturalism for the sake of diversity. Any plain, regular people just don't fit in. Being nice to others is called manners, not coercion for the new world order. Do you actually behave and speak the same way at home as you do at Chevron? Okay, let everyone start bashing me.

Take some much need family time while on unemployment. Enjoy the little ones for once. Maybe go back to school and work part time if needed. Just enjoy life for a change.

Unemployment, severance, and emergency savings will keep us happily unemployed for 2-3 years in worse case scenario. The plan is to hone some skills through certifications, travel for a couple months, relax, and job hunt. Hope to be employed by beginning of 4Q this year. New job will likely be out of O&G and a big paycut.

I am lucky enough that I was able to employ myself within 6-12 weeks and this is how I got started. It's in no way a get rich quick scheme, it takes dedication to learn new skills, but what "job" doesn't. So paste the link in your browser and all I ask is that you keep an open mind.

Look for a job, spend more time with family, catch up with chores around the house, relax, sleep in, trade stocks. I see it as a rare opportunity to just take a break.
