Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Adios

After 43 years in the Oil Industry I am done. My meeting is in 15 minutes. Wishing everyone the best! It has been a good ride, I have no complaints!

59 year white male. I can't really say Chevron gave me a bad deal. I'm a reservoir engineer, probably unemployable until the price of oil gets above $60 on new field development and revitalizing tired old fields but I'll enjoy my year's severance til the money runs out in some 3rd world tropical place with the wife while the late teen kids keep the vandals out of our Houston house. Hopefully we'll be in an up cycle by then and I can get a job again, even if as a .consultant. I have 34 years , full severance of a year's pay, so all is good at least in the short term. I thank my ROM-rep who didn't make me perp walk under police escort to the black limos parked outside of 1400. Gave me 6 days to transition and empty out my personal things.

However, I really feel bad for the 10-20 year folks with kids in school, large mortages on their house, not enough years for a big severance to tide them over. Praying for all of you!

No hole digging! Today is rough, I know because I got cut as well. But let me remind you that oil will bounce back and we, the oil patch, will need your skill set. I worked as a contractor before coming to chevron and can't wait to return to the freelance lifestyle when things pick back up.

Health insurance in places like Thailand and Philippines is dirt cheap, the lifestyle is great.

Don't talk about digging holes. You've so much more in life than your job!

@GN95MAq - Good luck to you sir, may you have a long and enjoyable retirement!!

@GN95MAq-utx - Use your severance time to find an employer who will appreciate you experience and knowledge! It'll all work out for you.

Hey don't worry too much. I found a petroleum engineering job at 59 and know plenty of over 55's that work contract for large and small independents.

Why would anyone dig a hole?

Retire to the Philippines and you will have all the fun you want, and your half of the retirement will go a long way.

At 60, utx, that's it for you and most anyone else your age. Unless you want to bag groceries at HEB or greet customers at Walmart/Sam's Club, it's the end of your working years. Find a small place to retire to live on your Chevron annuity pension (don't take the Lump Sum). In two short years, you can add Social Security to your monthly cash flow. If you are good with your hands, you can make some tax-free side cash as a handyman.

I am 60 years old and had been a (petroleum) production engineer for the last 35 years.. tell me, any suggestion of relevant job in other industry I can apply to now that I am laid off? My wife divorced me for working 70 hour weeks in the office in the last 4 years supporting 2 college kids. She took half of my life long savings, took the house and the car and half of my 401(K). Is this the time for me to retire or dig a hole for myself?

all in our 50s-60s will likely never work again in a corporate position. You young folks keep cranking it out as I need my social security paid regularly.

I just got back from my 15 minutes of fame meeting. My job position was eliminated. Not much discussed, just apologies and small talk. Boss wants me in the office all next week before going home to wait on the WARN period to expire. I am a 56 year old white male with 24 years at Chevron ending at PSG 21. I had a good run but at my age and specific skill set applicable to my job only, my prospects outside of my job type are slim. At least my wife works an average office job elsewhere that will help support our household expenses.
