I was "let out" in 2003... yes.. 13 years ago.. at age 50... WITHOUT a 4 year degree.... scary times... but... it was ME... I was in charge of my future... took 10 months off intentionally... time to heal my head... get CVX out of my blood... best time of my life... looked for work for 30 days.. landed two different job offers within 3 days... at 10% above my pay rate that I left Chevron with... have NEVER EVER looked back... YOU CAN DO THIS... not always easy... but BE IN CHARGE of your own destiny... If you haven't figured out you were always just a number... Theres little hope for you.

I survived the Bust of the 80's. Back then there were more engineers selling used cars in Houston than working for the operating companies or few consulting firms. I took a 50% pay decrease in nine months and felt lucky to have a job. For those that survived and rode the recovery upward, the past 30 years have been good ones overall. In time, the cycle will repeat, but the Bust is back and this one will be worse. This industry and those who remain will have to relearn what the "Old Timers" knew...How to produce on a shoestring. How to make quick decisions without studying things to death. How to lose the "Political Correct Feel Good Attitude" and roll up the sleeves and get dirty again.

In these times, unless you are extremely good at what you do, you may be unemployed for a very long time. So be prepared. This may be the 7 years of famine.
Only difference is in 2003-2004 the market was booming. It is not a boom market right now
