Lean Sigma, the program where the savings are made up and reality doesn't matter

What a joke of a program. People claim the stupidest things.

People! People! Calm yourselves down. Please look at our financial statements to the SEC so you will be convinced of our Lean Sigma savings. ....what you don't see them?... Need a team to find out where these dollars are going! Oh wait... They don't exist! It's not money we saved, it's money we didn't spend.

And everyone wonders why BCG was brought in...because we can't trust ourselves.

Pathetic. Major issues at this company.

I've been in a few workshops where the SMEs couldn't even explain what they do or how their process works. The same team members didn't even know what each other were doing. The process owners do not make their people accountable for anything. One BU was called out on how their reported metrics didn't reflect reality and were tweaked to make themselves look good. They basically told the LS person who discovered it to shut it and report it like management wants so they look better. Reality is not allowed at Chevron, everything has to be sunshine and roses, the Chevron yes.

Favorite comment during a Lean Sigma project brainstorming meeting- "Can we use Lean Sigma to get rid of Lean Sigma?" Awkward silence ensued...

The problem isn't lean sigma, it's a great process and works as advertised when done right. The problem is executive management allowing Green Badge Lean Sigma Experts to run rampant and with free rein. Were #1 not only in safety but ROCE etc until the LS Consultants came in and convinced just how bad we are.

Blah blah blah Chevron this and Chevron that. Was a great company before the reaper came looking for you. Now bad CVX. You all are losers. Posting BS all the time. You will not survive, trust me. The world is full of complainers. You are just that. I would hate to be part of your family hearing all this negativity all the time.

LS at Chevron is a waste of time. Most of the time the subject matter experts couldn't manage their way out of a wet paper bag!!

All unproductive overhead is an unnecessary luxury. Keep the Lean Sigma Specialists working in ETC only to help find efficiencies in multimillion Dollar projects. In other BUs and OPCOs, we can lean sigma them out of the company.

Lean Sigma specialist are ridiculous. We do this on a regular basis - and then we capture savings and process efficiencies as lean sigma. So - do we need this extra overhead? Chevron Way...

Lean Sigma has worked great at Gorgon. Without it we might be $30 billion over budget.

"Can become a hindrance???" That is like saying pancreatic cancer may be a problem. Lean sigma at Chevron is the biggest "whopper" of all time. It ranks right up there with OJ's innocence.

Lean Sigma most certainly does work, but not everywhere. In Chevron's multimillion Dollar complex projects, LS has a worthwhile application to save lots of money and improve efficiencies. For routine operations and small cost projects, it can become a hindrance and a waste of money, especially if you have a dedicated staff on the payroll of OPCOs that don't run large or complex projects.
